Initial jobless claims fell 10,000 in the July 20 week to a lower-than-expected 235,000, a level right in line with the 4-week average which edged marginally higher to 235,500.

The advance estimate of second quarter 2024 GDP surprises to the upside with a gain of 2.8 percent after an unrevised up 1.4 percent in the first quarter. 

New orders for manufactured durable goods decreased by $18.6 billion or 6.6% to $264.5 billion in June, following a 0.1% increase in May.

Crude oil inventories declined by 3.7 million barrels to 436.5 million barrels in the week ended July 19 from 440.2 million in the week ended July 12. The latest total is 5 percent below the 5-year average for this time of year, and down 4.5 percent from a year ago.

In June 2024, the sales of new single-family houses in the United States reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 617,000, marking a 0.6 percent decrease from the revised May rate of 621,000 and a 7.4 percent decline compared to the June 2023 estimate of 666,000.

The NAR data on sales of existing homes are down 5.4 percent in June to 3.890 million units at a seasonally adjusted annual rate after an unrevised 4.11 million units in May. The level is down 5.4 percent compared to a year ago. 

In the week ending July 13, the seasonally adjusted initial claims for unemployment rose by 20,000 to 243,000. The previous week's claims were revised up by 1,000 to 223,000. The 4-week moving average increased by 1,000 to 234,750.
