Comic-Con International is officially underway, and our San Diego Adult Day Services participants got in on the action! During opening day, participants volunteered by greeting guests, handing out lanyards and booklets, and organizing swag bags. After volunteering, we had the opportunity to explore the Convention Center and scope out everyone's fun costumes. Thank you to Comic-Con for making this an accessible and fun experience for our Adult Day Services program. We had a blast and can't wait for next year!

I rarely watch TV with commercials anymore, but when I did this past week, I was surprised to see this "Disability is not a dirty word" campaign by Easterseals Southern California. You can see the video below and a link to the full campaign here: https://lnkd.in/gqjv-Qdz The campaign was direct, clear, and inspiring. It puts people who represent their movement and mission front and center. I loved seeing people different from me on the screen. And I appreciated how the message about whether or not to use #disability was demystified. As a writer and marketing consultant for nonprofits, I think A LOT about the words we use, why we choose them, and how we use them. Disability vs. differently abled is a good example of how attempts at inclusive language can fall short. The Easterseals campaign stands by its position that disability is a term that should be celebrated and embraced. I, for one, appreciate the boldness of a campaign that can inform, educate, and inspire us. This is not just about the power of words. There is power in seeing more diversity in the people they chose for the campaign. I'll be honest. This stuff is hard. What one person considers inclusive language can be considered condescending to another. Ultimately, it's best to let people from those respective communities lead the way on what works for them. It's our job to listen, learn, and act to support these communities, even if we stumble along the way. Happy writing!
