Whether kids are bringing their own lunch or eating a school-provided meal, there are ways we can decrease waste and "sustain-ify" the overall lunch experience. Here're some quick tips: 1️⃣ Brown paper bags are out of style (and quite wasteful)—it's time to invest in reusable lunchboxes and food containers. Let your kiddo pick out the pattern/color to make it more fun for them. 2️⃣ Purchasing food items your family loves in bulk is better for your wallet AND creates less packaging waste—it's a win-win. Try reusable bags and snack pouches to make sharing easier. 3️⃣ Buy foods your kiddo will actually eat. (Easier said than done, we know.) The James River provides critical drinking water for more than one-third of all Virginians! Unfortunately, not so long ago, it was also one of the most polluted rivers in the United States. The James River Association (JRA) was founded to protect this critical freshwater resource and its many benefits for the people of Virginia. Today, the JRA is still committed to this goal and can proudly say that the James River is no longer one of the nation's most polluted, but one of its most improved. Protecting Minnesota wilderness from the harms of mining! Save the Boundary Waters is an #EarthShare Partner focused on conserving wild spaces in the northern Minnesota Boundary Waters region. This area contains 20% of all freshwater in the National USDA Forest Service System. Their greatest opposition? Copper mining. Did you know prairie dogs are a keystone species?! In other words, their presence (while physically small) is critical to their habitat. Native to North American grasslands, these mini mammals support 130 other species within their ecosystem, providing key nutrients to the soil via digging . . . and as a vital food source.🫣 Without prairie dogs, grasslands get overrun with woody plants (like trees and shrubs), which drastically alter the habitat. The main difference between biomes and ecosystems? Size. BIOMES are sweeping and can contain many ecosystems within them—all of which share similar environmental conditions. ECOSYSTEMS are typically smaller and take a closer look at the interactions between organisms and their environments. (Does anyone else remember making a shoebox biome when you were a kid?
