I am excited to share that last month, Project EcoLearn Nigeria officially launched and the training sessions for the first term was concluded last week. Allow me elaborate. Project EcoLearn Nigeria aims to infuse Sustainable Development into public school through the most sustainable means possible, the teachers. You see while there is currently a lot of work being done in spreading awareness and educating the Nigerian populace on the challenges and opportunities of sustainable development, not so much is being done to ensure that these campaigns last the test of time. This is the gap the project seeks to bridge, teachers are responsible for shaping the next generation and if we truly need the next generation to be more intentional about sustainability then we surely need to shape our teachers. This idea was developed by a group of youth led Organizations, Youth Sustainable Development Network (YSDN) , Earthplus Sustainability Network, WHATisDESIGN (WID) in partnership with Consulate General of the Netherlands in Lagos PSSDC MAGODO and Lagos State Government A fun fact, majority the curriculum of this novel project was developed by myself and Ayomikun Joshua Kukoyi in 2022 when we thought of bringing sustainability to public schools in a different approach from what was existing and worked towards bringing it to life. We had attempted with working with the ministry of education to bring the project to life but couldn’t get past certain fundamental challenges and had to pause the project. Fast forward to 2024, we were overjoyed to witness the impact the curriculum we developed has on the teachers in real time. What was once an idea with many hurdles became a successfully implemented program with a sustainable road map for further implementation. I must commend the staff of PSSDC MAGODO for they are dedicated to creating impact and honestly are passionate about what they do. I wish to also thank the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Lagos for the constant support and encouragement to youth development and the sdgs in Lagos, Nigeria. To the project manager Kayode Ogunleye Emmanuel, you’re doing a wonderful job! And to my other colleagues Funmilayo Ajala Seun Olatunji, Blessing Ojo, Ayomikun Joshua Kukoyi and every other member of the team, congratulations to us for bringing an idea to life.

Lekan Bakare Foundation (LBF) was well represented at the launch of the Eco-Learn Nigeria Initiative, a significant step forward in advancing climate education in Lagos. In collaboration with partners such as the Youth Sustainable Development Network (YSDN), Earthplus Sustainability Network, and WHATisDESIGN (WID) with support from the Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria, Public Service Staff Development Centre PSSDC MAGODO and the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Lagos, the Eco-Learn Nigeria seeks to address the pressing need for #climateliteracy among Lagosians. This initiative focuses on empowering youth and students, who play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable future for Lagos and beyond. Through innovative educational programs, workshops, and more, they will gain the knowledge, skills, and motivation to tackle climate challenges and embrace sustainable lifestyles.
