About us

The mission of the Early Career Ocean Professionals Group (ECOP) is to contribute to new ways of thinking that address global challenges related to ocean sustainability and stewardship. We'll do this by ensuring that ECOPs have opportunities to learn and develop to reach their full potential. Underlying this effort is the goal of the ECOP group to provide meaningful opportunities for ECOPs from around the world to engage with each other and with local to global institutions underneath the framework of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

  • 🎧 Recommended weekend listening: Ocean InSight Podcast from MeerWissen Initiative The final episode of Season three brings together various topics from the previous episodes in a discussion on what it takes to enable lasting sustainability transformation for the ocean and the communities that depend on it. Our guests, Jacqueline Uku, Chair of the African Ocean Decade Taskforce and former president of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), and ABDOULAYE DIAGANA, Programmes Coordinator at the Abidjan Convention Secretariat, are sharing their thoughts on innovation, inclusion and finance and what can be done to create preconditions for successful transformation.   For example, how can we improve equitable, gender-responsive representation in decision-making across scales? What role do we see for existing and innovative financing instruments, and can co-design approaches make projects more attractive for private and public investment? How can we encourage governments and the private sector to increase their spending on marine issues?   Join the conversation with Kira Gee, #MSP expert and #scientist, and Alison Clausen, Deputy Director of the #OceanDecade, co-hosts of Season 3 of the Ocean InSight podcast series.   So dive right in to hear about transformation already taking place and how innovation, inclusion and finance can and should be linked to upscale sustainability transformation. This July we're sharing the series of video interviews that the ECOP Programme team, in collaboration with GOAL Global and The Ocean Knowledge Action Network compiled for the satellite event, "The Inclusivity We Need for the Ocean We Want," during the Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona in April, 2024. This initiative features members of coastal and indigenous communities from Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and provides them with a platform to share their experiences and needs during the UN Ocean Decade. The goal of these videos is to amplify the voices of different groups worldwide that are often underrepresented in high-level discussions but whose involvement in decision-making is essential to achieve the ocean we (all) want. In this video small-scale fisher Adolfo Fuén Suazo from the community of El Corozal explains the challenges his community is facing and the importance of addressing them to ensure that the next generation can enjoy the many riches that the ocean can offer us. • 📣 Calling all early career ocean professionals in the maritime industry! The Global Youth in Maritime Outlook Survey has just launched! 🚢 The Office of the Youth in Maritime (YIMO) - https://lnkd.in/dVs2Qrwi - launched a survey on the International Day of the Seafarer (June 25): “Through the Lookout’s Binoculars: A Global Youth in Maritime Outlook''. ❓The purpose of this survey is to understand the perspectives of seafarers, younger maritime professionals, and the general public as the maritime industry navigates new challenges and opportunities. This survey also seeks to benchmark the support to the Office of the Youth in Maritime (YIMO) as the first seafarer-led youth-focused organization in the United Nations system. The outcomes of the survey will feed to the advocacy campaign of the YIMO and the UN Ocean Decade Endorsed Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP) Programme. 🌊 Thanks to Yrhen Bernard Sabanal Balinis MRIN, MNI, AMIMarEST for driving this initiative forward, full steam! ⚓️ Take the survey here: https://lnkd.in/d9ydWbq2

  • On 7-8 June 2024, several ECOP Programme team members including ECOP MOROCCO's Sophia Laarissa M., ECOP Malaysia's Afiq Durrani Mohd Fahmi and Communications Coordinator Natalie Fox, plus Bernardo Leal, Vera Noon, Shamim Wasii Nyanda, Martina G. and Amy Kenworthy (and many more) attended the first Ocean Literacy World Conference in Venice, Italy. The event was hosted by the UNESCO Ocean, in collaboration with the Government of Italy, the Municipality of Venice, and the Prada Group. Francesca Santoro, Senior Programme Officer at IOC-UNESCO, and Coordinator of the Ocean Literacy With All Programme expertly guided everyone through an (ocean) action-packed agenda of speakers and activities. The ECOP group contributed to the development of the Venice Declaration, a living document which will help shape the agenda for the 2025 UN Ocean Conference. The event was testament to those dedicated to developing the field of ocean literacy - especially Francesca, the Venice UNESCO team and Nicola Bridge, who delivered an inspirational and motivating keynote talk. Check out the article just published on the ECOP Programme website for more information: https://lnkd.in/dwxWGAbV
