With the mission to lead East Tennessee into the future of housing, AIA East Tennessee recently concluded their 2024 ADU Design Competition! Focused on accessory dwelling units (ADUs), this competition brought fresh ideas to the table, addressing the region’s missing middle housing needs. We are proud to share that ESa architecture team member, Jakob Mikres and his collaborator, Anna Haynes, have been selected as one of the six jury selections in the "Standard ADU" category for their project, Bento House, in this year's ADU Design Competition! Congratulations to all of the groups recognized! Bento House represents a vision of resilient, adaptable living. Serving as both a container for life and creation, this ADU adapts to the evolving needs of its occupants, ensuring comfort, efficiency, and accessibility. Clad in locally-sourced materials, it complements Knoxville’s Streetcar Neighborhood style while maintaining its own unique identity. Playful, operable windows capture natural light and provide a connection to the outdoors, with a carport designed to double as a gathering space. Whether for short-term rentals, long-term tenants, or multi-generational living, Bento House transforms without major renovations, encouraging future-proof housing solutions for Knoxville’s growing needs. In our latest employee spotlight feature, we get to know Hannah Cornelius! Hannah is a dedicated project manager and team leader at ESa specializing in healthcare architecture. Her passion for this field stems from personal family experiences in healthcare. With six years at ESa, she’s contributed to impactful projects like the Children’s of Atlanta Hospital and St. Thomas River Park. Beyond architecture, Hannah is a strong advocate for cancer research with the American Cancer Society and serves on the American Heart Association’s PULSE Board and Women in Healthcare. Her passion for leadership, mentorship, and community service shines in both her professional and personal life. We are thrilled to share that the Belmont University - Jack C. Massey Center, has been honored with the Award of Merit in Higher Education/Research by Engineering News Record (ENR) Southeast. This achievement highlights the incredible collaboration, innovative design, and dedication that went into completing this state-of-the-art facility in just 18 months. From cutting-edge technology to thoughtfully designed spaces for both students and faculty, the Jack C. Massey Center truly stands out. The facility was also recently LEED Silver and Fitwel One Star certified -- making it the first Fitwell certified higher education project in Tennessee and the sixth in the U.S. Congratulations to the entire design and construction team! The St. Paul Christian Academy Dining Hall Theatre Renovation has transformed the dining hall into a dynamic and flexible space, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics. The new design features a modern layout with versatile seating options and an updated kitchen that supports a variety of food services. Our goal was to create a welcoming environment that fosters community and supports the academy’s educational mission. The AdventHealth Minneola team celebrated a significant milestone in construction this week, the topping-out of the new facility! The ninth AdventHealth campus in the Central Florida community has now reached its full height of four stories. The milestone celebrates the construction and design team’s achievement since the project began in December 2023. The hospital will be located on Hancock Road at Florida’s Turnpike, off the Minneola interchange. The facility will be approximately 204,000 square feet, and will include an emergency department; full-service imaging; operating suites; endoscopy services; outpatient laboratory; heart catheterization labs; 80 private inpatient rooms, including critical care beds and surgical suites. AdventHealth Minneola is scheduled to open in late 2025.

The new Amherst Health Center, part of University Hospitals, expands UH Rainbow Children’s Hospital and other primary care services in Lorain County, offering families access to a wide range of primary and specialty care physicians. The facility includes the ValueHealth Amherst Beaver Creek Surgery Center, which offers outpatient surgical services, various medical specialties, and state-of-the-art medical technology. The center aims to enhance local access to high-quality healthcare, reducing the need for residents to travel to larger cities. Exciting news for Nashville! The Store announced its plans to open a second location on the campus of TriStar Centennial Medical Center, part of HCA Healthcare. The two organizations are working together to help Nashvillians with food insecurity. Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams-Paisley are co-founders of The Store, a nonprofit organization that offers a free, referral-based grocery store to empower Nashville families and individuals in need. The current location is on Belmont University’s campus and offers fresh, nutritious food and wrap-around services to over 1,000 individuals, children and families each year. We're thrilled to be part of this fantastic addition to our community for the second time. ESa designed the first location on Belmont University’s campus.
