Antireflective coatings on solar panels' glass surfaces are crucial to ensure that enough light reaches the PV cells underneath. If these coatings are damaged, the optical transmission of the glass is compromised and the solar energy efficiency of the system decreases. Ducom UniTest can be equipped with a Scratch Tester Module to investigate the failure of multilayered coatings on glass samples, with a 2% accuracy in determining their failure. Soot is a carbon-based material that can contaminate the motor oils in gasoline and diesel engines. Soot can increase fuel consumption because of sludge formation and the higher viscosity of the contaminated oil, increasing greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, Ducom’s High-Frequency Reciprocating Rig - HFRR 4.2 was used to run tests with soot-contaminated engine oils, and a Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to evaluate the soot wear mechanism on fresh steel surfaces, and preconditioned steel. The flow properties of diesel fuel govern the safety of the internal combustion engine. During the winter season, the low temperature would cause the paraffin in diesel fuel to crystallize, clogging the filter and blocking the diesel flow. Fuel suppliers treat diesel to assure diesel flow with a season-dependent modification of the additives package. Diesel provides two crucial functions for an automotive vehicle. It serves as a fuel, and it also acts as a lubricant to protect critical moving parts like the gearbox used in a diesel fuel pump. How do these seasonal changes affect the lubricity of diesel? Ducom HFRR (High-Frequency Reciprocating Rig) identified the ideal combination of antiwear additives and low viscosity in different periods of the year, proving the seasonality of diesel lubricity. Moreover, they deteriorate aircraft’s surface profile and impact their aerodynamic efficiency. The working group of Dr. Harish C. Barshilia at CSIR - National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) developed ultra-thin (3 to 4 nm) metal/ceramic bilayers with a large number of interfaces to dissipate the particles' energy. The efficacy of these coatings was evaluated with Ducom Air Jet Erosion tester up to 150 m/s and 1000 °C.
