✨FOUNDER FEATURE✨ Orleatha Smith of Sip Herbals⁠ ⁠ When Orleatha Smith discovered she needed to give up her beloved coffee, she went on the hunt to find a suitable alternative to her morning ritual. However, she quickly found that the alternatives she tried either weren’t to her liking or included ingredients she’d rather avoid like nebulous “natural flavors.” So alongside her business partner, she set out to make her own using chicory, carob, and dandelion. One of my favourite things is seeing a vision come to life.  The Shopify Shop at #Afrotech was an experience to showcase a collection of over 20 Black-owned businesses and products. Each person who came through our booth had the opportunity to get one free, full-sized product and learn about the business and/or founder they received the product from. Curating the businesses that were part of this experience was incredibly difficult, as there is no shortage of phenomenal Black businesses out there. I compiled a collection of businesses that covered the following categories: food and beverage, beauty, apparel and jewelry and homeware. Seeing thousands of people come through the booth, with lines that never stopped, was equally as thrilling as it was exhausting. I felt an immense sense of pride to see it all come together. To finally see the result of the many ideas that lived in my head as tangible things and experiences. Each milestone in the booth got a special prize, with our 1,500th “customer” getting a beautiful Brandon Blackwood bag. The goal of our booth was that each person would have left with an opportunity to lean about Shopify's support of Black businesses, how it powers entrepreneurship, and, most importantly, that each person found new brands to shop from henceforth. Volunteers in the booth were from different departments of Shopify, giving people an opportunity to connect directly with Shopify employees who could share their diverse experiences. Here’s my 3-pronged approach I used for how we showed up: 1️⃣ The Shopify Shop at Afrotech, featuring businesses on Shopify and people who work at Shopify; 2️⃣ A Learning Labs talk on “The Power of Relationships: How Relationships Can Transform your Business and Career” - expertly led by Tito Alawode, MBA and Deana Thornton 3️⃣ An intimate dinner in partnership with Black Ambition to continue to foster connections and share actionable anecdotes from founders (Eunique Jones Gibson and Riana Lynn) who have truly been there and done that. Thank you to everyone who helped bring all of this together - volunteers, production, agency, stakeholders, business owners, attendees. None of this would have been successful without you. An extra special thank you to the Brandon Blackwood New York team for being a part of this. Crystal Hunt - You were phenomenal to work with.
