Our Mission: To create a healthy, vibrant downtown for all

About us

Established in 1958, the Downtown Seattle Association (DSA) is a nonprofit membership organization whose mission is to create a healthy, vibrant downtown for all. With the support of our corporate, nonprofit and residential members, we work to keep downtown economically competitive, address transportation challenges and ensure a safe, clean and inviting urban experience for workers, residents and visitors. DSA founded the Metropolitan Improvement District (MID), a 300-square-block business improvement district in downtown. With funding from MID ratepayers, we employ more than 150 ambassadors who provide cleaning, safety, concierge and outreach services throughout downtown. In partnership with city and county agencies, DSA also founded Commute Seattle, a transportation management agency that provides commuting resources for workers and businesses. Seattle did another big thing. The Overlook Walk opens today and it’s absolutely spectacular. This vantage point will become the new must see and experience spot in Seattle. Congratulations to everyone who was involved in this project. There’s much more to come as the entire Waterfront Park project nears full completion in early 2025.

The data on drugs and crime in Seattle is clear. Where you have a high concentration of drug sales and use, you have a significant amount of violent crime. The block in Seattle with the most overdose incidents is also the block with the most crime, according to the City Auditor. This drug trade has had devastating impacts on lives and on individual neighborhoods. As a city we're either deciding to disrupt a drug market or to foster one. There's no standing in between. The recent adoption of Stay Out of Drug Area zones in Seattle is one tool to help disrupt this chaos and the deadly marketplace where poison is pedaled on public streets and sidewalks. (We should also be making drug treatment easier to get than the drugs themselves as part of our overall response.) There is no single, easy answer to this crisis, but if someone is repeatedly violating laws in the same location, it's appropriate that judges have discretion to restrict their ability to return to those same areas and engage in the same illegal behavior to protect everyone who lives, works and visits there. Thank you to Seattle leaders for taking this step to address Seattle's drug crisis.

  • Earlier this month, during its 70th Annual Conference & Marketplace held in downtown Seattle, the International Downtown Association awarded DSA the prestigious Pinnacle Award for our Seattle City Makers Podcast hosted by DSA President & CEO Jon Scholes and produced by James Sido. This is our industry’s highest honor, representing the most creative and inspiring innovations. We also received two Awards of Excellence: one for our MID Clean Team’s innovative trike program and one for the support services our HR Team provides to assist MID ambassadors with personal and professional needs. Thanks to IDA for this recognition!

  • Meet Nathan, our DSA/MID August Ambassador of the Month. A Clean Team ambassador, Nathan is known for his character and proactive problem-solving skills. Both were on full display recently when he came to the aid of an elderly woman who had fallen and hurt her head. Nathan's quick thinking and compassion helped keep her  safe and calm until medics arrived. Join us in thanking and congratulating Nathan!

The downtown Bloom Loop rolls on. Some great news today for downtown Seattle’s arts and cultural sector. Thank you to the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. These gifts will result in more arts and cultural opportunities and experiences for all to enjoy and more support for great artists in our city and region. “Paul Allen’s foundation to give $9 million to downtown Seattle”
