Our client arrived in San Diego in July, with no car, no money and no immediate solutions having traveled ahead of his spouse hoping they could start a new life in a new place. The first two weeks in San Diego were incredibly challenging. He slept on the streets at night and tried to handle business during the day. He applied for numerous jobs and attempted to secure a bed in a shelter to no success. With determination he continued contacting organizations for support and eventually met Unhoused Care Team case manager, Crystal. He worked with her to secure a spot at the O Lot safe sleeping site by the end of July and felt a renewed sense of hope. One day, she encouraged him to attend a Stand Down event with her where he was able to address issues with the VA, made progress with a job application's entrance requirements, and received several on-the-spot job offers. As a result of that event, he was also matched and moved into transitional housing with VVSD and was approved for the VASH program, allowing him to begin looking for housing for his family. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the support of a caring community, showing that even the toughest challenges can be overcome with the right help and determination.

We’re not going to let this plan sit on a shelf! On Tuesday we began implementation of our 5-point Safety Plan that advocates for a cleaner and safer Downtown. Yesterday, we hosted a working meeting with Mayor Todd Gloria, San Diego Police Department, San Diego Fire-Rescue, San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), and Downtown businesses and residents. We talked about next steps to put our safety plan in action, and what success metrics look like. Some items are more easy to implement than others, some items are already in motion, and some will take more funding and planning. The bottom line is that we need ALL levels of government (Federal, County, State and City) aligned to work together to address Downtown’s urgent crises on our streets and sidewalks. We look forward to a future coalition meeting with the County of San Diego to discuss CARE Court, State Senate Bill 43 implementation, and Prop 1 funding in Downtown.
