Improving public transportation for America's communities
About us
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) works to improve public transportation for America's communities. Since 1964, FTA has partnered with state and local governments to create and enhance public transportation systems. Today, we invest more than $20 billion annually to support and expand public rail, bus, trolley, ferry and other transit services. That investment has helped modernize public transportation and extended service into small cities and rural communities that previously lacked transit options. FTA also oversees safety measures and helps develop next-generation technology research. An agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), FTA is headed by an administrator appointed by the President of the United States. FTA is one of DOT’s 10 modes of transportation and is run by a headquarters in Washington, D.C. as well as 10 regional offices that assist transit agencies in all states and U.S. territories. FTA is an organization of more than 550 diverse, talented, enthusiastic people working to strengthen American communities, promote economic vitality, and maintain personal freedom through the development and support of public transportation.

Thanks to a $3 million FTA grant, The University of Alabama will be one of the first colleges to have autonomous transit buses on campus. The buses will include several cutting-edge automation features, such as pedestrian awareness, lane orientation and automatic braking. Drivers, who will manage the technology, will undergo campus-wide training, including virtual simulation. The university expects the buses to be in operation on campus in 2025. #RollTide and roll with transit! tinyurl.com/mrysyrbf

North County Transit District unveiled a new on-demand transit service in San Marcos, the first of 4 planned pilot program areas. The on-demand service is available in a 10-square mile zone and includes connections to 4 rail stations and 72 bus stops, including at Palomar College and California State University San Marcos. Workers, college students and others can hop on a van and head to a destination within the zone, providing a new way to #TakeTransit. tinyurl.com/m4j29urd

Happy 20th Birthday to Metro Transit’s Blue Line light rail route, Minnesota’s first light rail. Since it opened on June 26, 2004, passengers have taken nearly 177 million rides on the service! The addition of the light rail has transformed the Twin Cities’ public transportation network, encouraged millions of dollars in nearby housing development and spurred line extensions. Metro is planning a $3 billion extension to the 12-mile Blue Line route.

Full circle moment: After helping break ground on the project just two years ago, FTA joined Kitsap Transit today in Silverdale, WA to celebrate the grand opening of the Kitsap Transit Center. Replacing a 20-year-old transfer center that had outlived its usefulness, this new modern hub will unlock access to St. Michael Medical Center, nearby housing and commercial developments, and the Kitsap Transit service area, which includes buses and ferries throughout Kitsap County as well as cross-Sound service to Seattle. FTA was proud to support the project with $10 million.

Congrats to Metra Commuter Rail for opening the Peterson/Ridge Station, which will make the ride smoother for Chicagoland commuters. FTA provided $7 million in federal support for the new station.
🚂 The new station is officially dedicated. Metra, state, and local officials broke ground as they cut the ribbon at the new Peterson/Ridge Station in Chicago.

Did You Know? In December 1970, The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey opened the Lincoln Tunnel’s exclusive bus lane to speed up transit travel into Manhattan. The 2.5-mile contra-flow lane allowed bus passengers to bypass morning rush-hour traffic, saving 15 minutes. “I couldn’t believe it,” said one commuter. “When we pulled into our stall at the Port Authority Terminal, everybody applauded.” After a trial period, the lane was made permanent and today carries more than 18.5 million passengers a year. tinyurl.com/mbvmd9h6
