To promote See Tracks? Think Train® Week, FTA attended an event in Alexandria, VA, hosted by the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA). The event celebrated Transit Safety Day and highlighted the importance of safe practices when riding or near public transportation systems. Together, we can prevent rail crossing and trespass incidents across North America #STOPTrackTragedies bit.ly/4d3bgnp

Improving public transportation for America's communities
About us
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) works to improve public transportation for America's communities. Since 1964, FTA has partnered with state and local governments to create and enhance public transportation systems. Today, we invest more than $20 billion annually to support and expand public rail, bus, trolley, ferry and other transit services. That investment has helped modernize public transportation and extended service into small cities and rural communities that previously lacked transit options. FTA also oversees safety measures and helps develop next-generation technology research. An agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), FTA is headed by an administrator appointed by the President of the United States. FTA is one of DOT’s 10 modes of transportation and is run by a headquarters in Washington, D.C. as well as 10 regional offices that assist transit agencies in all states and U.S. territories. FTA is an organization of more than 550 diverse, talented, enthusiastic people working to strengthen American communities, promote economic vitality, and maintain personal freedom through the development and support of public transportation.

Congrats to Plaquemines Port in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. Last week, FTA awarded the harbor over $18.6 million to replace the Pointe à La Hache ferry landings, which were severely damaged by Tropical Storm Harvey in 2017. With the barges out of service since last year, travel times for Plaquemines Parish have skyrocketed, requiring residents to drive or find a ride over 90 miles to cross the Mississippi River, compared to the previous half-mile ferry ride. With the federal funding, Plaquemines Port can finally restore this critical transportation link, ensuring safe, convenient service for residents of Plaquemines Parish, St. Bernard and Jefferson Parish. Repairs to the crossing are expected to be complete by early 2025. #ferryweek tinyurl.com/4smwhscd

FTA issued a general directive to help prevent assaults on transit workers. The directive requires more than 700 of the nation’s largest transit agencies to address the significant safety risks related to assaults on transit workers by conducting a safety risk assessment, identifying safety risk strategies and more.

Last week, at an event announcing this year’s Passenger Ferry grants, FTA Deputy Administrator Veronica Vanterpool promoted the Maine Department of Transportation's $16.5 million grant to modernize two ferry terminals in Waldo County. The project will also allow the agency to buy charging equipment, expand docking space for safer, more efficient boarding, and set the stage for a future hybrid electric ferry. #ferryweek tinyurl.com/4smwhscd

Kudos to Chatham Area Transit Authority (CAT) for receiving a $700,000 ferry grant from FTA. The federal funding will allow the Georgia transit agency to buy electric charging stations to support the Savannah Belles ferry fleet. The project will improve operational efficiency and comes just in time for 2 new hybrid vessels expected to join CAT’s fleet later this year. #ferryweek tinyurl.com/4smwhscd
