The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (#DPAA) announced that #USArmy Pvt. 1st Class Marcus A. Engesser, 21, of Vallejo, #California, who was captured and died as a POW during #WWII, was #AccountedFor September 27, 2023. In late 1942, Engesser was a member of Company L, 31st Infantry Regiment in the Philippines, during WWII, when Japanese forces invaded the Philippine Islands in December. Intense fighting continued until the surrender of the #Bataan peninsula on April 9, 1942, and of Corregidor Island on May 6, 1942. To identify Engesser’s remains, scientists from #DPAA used dental and anthropological analysis and circumstantial evidence. Additionally, Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (#AFMES) scientists used mitochondrial #DNA (#mtDNA) analysis. In the summer of 1942, Hinson was a member of the Chemical Warfare Service, U.S. Army, when Japanese forces invaded the Philippine Islands in December. #WelcomeHomeWednesday: Today, we celebrate the return of three courageous service members, honoring their courage and sacrifice. In solemn ceremonies nationwide, families of our fallen heroes were presented with the folded American flag, a symbol of our enduring gratitude and respect. On May 9, 2024, Adam Morrill, nephew of U.S. Navy Radioman 3rd Class Starring B. Winfield, received the flag at Arlington National Cemetery, commemorating Winfield's sacrifice aboard the #USSOklahoma during the attack on #PearlHarbor. On May 8, 2024, Robert Griffin accepted the flag on behalf of his cousin, #USNavy Fire Controlman 1st Class Robert L. Corn, at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. Corn, who perished during the same tragic event, was recently brought home and laid to rest with honors. On April 26, 2024, Robert Sexton received the flag in honor of his uncle, #USArmy Air Forces Pvt. Doyle Sexton, recognizing his bravery during the harrowing days of #WWII. Their legacies live on, inspiring us to honor their memory and continue #OurPromise. #NeverForget #Research. #Recover. #Identify.

Working seamlessly together, we operate in shifts, ensuring round-the-clock efforts to maximize efficiency in our mission. Since the 1970s, our relentless dedication has led to the identification and repatriation of nearly 1,000 Americans killed in #WWII, offering closure to their families.
