Our DoSomething team had an amazing time earlier this week with members of Generation Citizen at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. While there, we held a "Show Up For What" workshop focused on public narrative and #VoterRegistration. Check out the highlights on our Instagram Stories! #WeDidThat #DoSomething #GenZ #TeenSummit2024
24 years ago, I was an impassioned and nervous teenager who had received an out of the blue invitation to be a youth correspondent for an episode of In The Mix on PBS, a show to encourage young people to engage with the election and civic life. With my press pass, I had full access to the Philadelphia RNC and interviewed people I had watched on TV through my childhood: Bob Dole, Larry King, Rudolph Guiliani, Dan Rather, James Carville, Tom Brokaw, and Jon Stewart. And I learned the most when I deviated from the script. Fast forward to another #RNC kickoff and while I am not in Milwaukee, the mission is the same. Engage the rising generation to make their voices heard in their communities and at the ballot box through real-world civics and accessible media. I am sitting in a room with 100 young New Yorkers, talking about the issues that matter to them, and partnering (again) with PBS (Erika Howard, FRONTLINE PBS) as well as Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts DoSomething.org and my amazing colleagues at Generation Citizen. What mattered to youth in 2000 and I still hear today: issues over parties, actions over speeches. #Truetothisnotnewtothis Time travel to the dawn of the century: https://lnkd.in/eNapAX5n

The incredible impact our members made at #CampReboot on #MentalHealth is truly remarkable! DoSomething members learned skills to manage their mental health through #MindCraft, learned how to talk confidently about mental health with their friends through #CertifiedBestie, and transformed ideas into reality through our mental health community of practice, The E.M.B.E.R Collective (The Empathy, Mindfulness, and Building Emotional Resilience Collective). DoSomething members now have the tools and resources to address mental health challenges and support others on their journeys. What skills or knowledge do YOU need to know to navigate your mental health?

Congratulations to my colleague Yasmine Mahdavi on her article "Volunteerism's Diversity Problem" being published in Stanford Social Innovation Review. It's a must read as she highlights the challenges of modern volunteerism as new generations of young people coming of age pressing for systemic change. Their civic curiosity often begins with volunteerism, but as she notes in the article volunteerism hasn't kept up with the diversification of Gen Z and Gen Alpha. To quote her "young people with limited social capital are more likely to have fewer connections to institutions that either facilitate or provide opportunities to participate in civic life." We're doing our part DoSomething.org, but the entire volunteer sector needs to evolve. I encourage you to give her piece a read. #volunteerism #getengaged #youngpeople
I am thrilled to share my latest article, "Volunteerism's Diversity Problem", published by Stanford Social Innovation Review. My article explores topics such as barriers to participation, inclusive practices, and community engagement. My deep gratitude to David Johnson and the rest of the editorial team for their collaboration. Thank you for your support! https://lnkd.in/efwQJ628

🚨Listen up! Young people have an opportunity to do something amazing this year, mobilizing each other to register to vote. DoSomething.org started the Voter Catalyst Network (VCN) at a time when almost 41 million Gen Zers will become eligible to vote this year, according to Tufts CIRCLE - it's amazing to be able to see young people voice the issues that matter to them on social media, blogs, and more! If you are someone who has been or is ready to lead your community to the polls through voter registrations, join VCN and become a voter captain. (there is so much in store when you do!) https://lnkd.in/eSSf5EHR

There are specific barriers that contribute to volunteerism’s diversity problems: Young people with limited social capital are more likely to have fewer connections to institutions that either facilitate or provide opportunities to participate in civic life; some simply cannot afford to volunteer because they cannot give up paid work or duties such as caring for family members. But there are solutions that can address these and other structural impediments of volunteerism models. Yasmine Mahdavi, the director of analysis and impact at DoSomething.org, writes about the organization’s commitment to building bridges so more young people will have access to volunteer opportunities and can realize their potential as leaders of social change.
