Shoutout to our partner Erika Thiem at Feeding America for her insights in a panel on food access and affordability for #ClimateWeekNYC: - Food insecurity data from USDA is as high as it was during the height of the pandemic; need has not gone down. - The industry needs to work together to keep the food we produce in the system for people to access, wherever possible. - We need a variety of technology solutions to help us capture food before it becomes waste. Watch the full session with Erika via the link below, along with great insights from her fellow panelists Nicholas Bertram of Flashfood, Julia DeSantis of The Farmlink Project, and Brandon Lombardi of Sprouts Farmers Market. Thanks to Sweta Chakraborty, PhD of We Don't Have Time for moderating. https://lnkd.in/egXpkgjY #ZeroWasteFuture #FoodSystems #Sustainability #FoodRecovery

On Friday at #ClimateWeekNYC, we heard incredible insights from leaders at the intersection of food recovery, sustainability, and technology about how we can work together to increase access to healthy, nutritious food while also making our food systems more resilient for future generations. CEO Ryan B. spoke alongside other industry leaders for a panel on food loss and food waste: Angel Veza of ReFED, Marc Zornes of Winnow, and Regina (Anderson) Harmon of Food Recovery Network. Some stand-out quotes from the panel: 💡"There's a desire to be hospitable and put the best out for your guests and diners, and sometimes it leads to unintended consequences, where too much food is produced. There are lots of different cultural factors that drive it, but it's that common desire to be hospitable, while also having a very busy, chaotic kitchen, that creates waste." —Marc Zornes on the primary causes of wasted food in food service environments. 💡"Chefs are so passionate about not wanting to waste food. What we learned is because the [restaurant] environment is so chaotic, that solutions need to be simple, convenient; these solutions need to not disrupt operations at all." —Angel Vera of ReFED talking about adoption of solutions for diverting wasted food among restaurants. 💡 "Gen Z, millennials–the largest population in the U.S. right now–these are their expectations: the gig is up, we have to stop throwing food away." –Regina Harmon on generational perspectives on food waste as it relates to food insecurity and climate change. Thank you to everyone who helped create this incredible event to close out Climate Week: to Stacey Vanek Smith from Bloomberg for moderating Ryan’s panel; to Danielle Nierenberg from Food Tank for emceeing and organizing the event along with your colleagues Bernard Pollack and Kenzie Wade; to our co-sponsors ReFED, Flashfood, Apeel; and to The Greene Space at WNYC/WQXR for hosting. Together we can end wasted food. If you didn't make it to Climate Week, or you didn't have a chance to connect with our Divert team in person, reach out. We'd love to learn more about your food waste goals: https://lnkd.in/gghPSDzk #ZeroWasteFuture #FoodSystems #Sustainability #FoodRecovery

It's clear from the data that food recovery is vital to solving the wasted food problem and food insecurity. So why does so much edible food get tossed in the landfill, instead of being donated? Every sector of the food industry faces challenges to donation. For #HungerActionMonth, our latest blog post takes a closer look at those challenges and how to address them through measurement and data, as well as industry collaboration. #FoodInsecurity #FoodSystems #FoodRecovery #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/eeS2Cfji
