Did you know that books are mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors? This metaphor, outlined by author Rudine Sims Bishop, explains that books are mirrors when readers are able to see their lives reflected in the pages. Books are windows when they give readers a look at experiences different from their own. Books are sliding glass doors when readers are transported into the story and feel empathy for the characters. Our coalition is committed to creating more of these mirrors, windows, and doors — one diverse book at a time. Access to quality, diverse books is a pivotally important solution to the United States' reading and early education crisis. A new study by First Book found that student reading time increased by 4 hours per week on average after educators added diverse books to their classroom libraries. Furthermore, the addition of diverse books boosted their reading scores.
