About us
Digital Square brings partners together to improve how the global community designs, uses, and pays for digital health tools and approaches. We work with innovators to advance adaptable, replicable tools that are designed to work together seamlessly. We work with governments and country-based technology experts to strengthen local capacity to implement and manage digital health programs. We work with donors to identify new ways to invest that ensure long-term success and align with country priorities. By strengthening the coordination among these partners, Digital Square reorients the market to better match tools and approaches to the needs of countries and communities. Digital Square is a PATH-led initiative funded and designed by the United States Agency for International Development, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and a consortium of other donors. This LinkedIn page was made possible by the generous support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development. The contents are the responsibility of PATH and do not necessarily reflect the views of USAID or the United States Government.

We had the chance to meet Wahida Omary, a software developer for the Tanzania Medical Stores Department, during a FHIR training in Arusha last month. Women currently account for only ~21% of all developers in Africa, but that is changing. At the training, Wahida shared some advice for other women considering a career in #digitalhealth. Female developers - like Wahida Salumu Omary, pictured below - can particularly benefit from capacity-strengthening opportunities in digital health and data to help bridge the digital gender divide. For example, capacity strengthening can: 💡 Expose women to other developers and create awareness of opportunities for women in digital health. 💬 Help establish a platform where women can connect, collaborate, and inspire other women to seize opportunities. ♀ Help ensure that more women are included in the development of inclusive digital health systems that meet their needs. Last week, we had the opportunity to showcase our digital health work during an event in Lusaka celebrating 20 years of PATH’s work in Zambia advancing health equity. Several members of our team including Mandy Samatebele Dube, Dr Joseph Kayaya, and Chilunga Puta, spoke to delegates about some of PATH’s key ongoing and future digital health projects in the country, including: 💉 DRIVE Demand—strengthening the data-driven health system to reach routine immunization targets. 👩⚕️ U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) Digital Community Health Initiative (DCHI)—strengthening health care delivery by investing in the scale-up of digitally enabled community health platforms and support to Community Health Workers (CHWs). 👨🏫 Digital Health Applied Leadership Program (DHALP)—preparing digital health leaders to create and lead digital transformation initiatives for health systems strengthening through learning and coaching. Pictured here is Mandy Dube, Project Director for the Zambia Digital Community Health initiative, demonstrating the Community Health Information Platform (CHiP) to delegates (From left to right: Dr. Anchindika Mugala, Professor Roma Chilengi, Dr. Psychas, Dr. Sinyangwe, Dr. Bakyaita, Dr. Muyunda, Margaret Chisenga, Benjamin Solochi, and Mandy Dube). ChiP is composed of a phone application, a paper-to-digital character optical recognition application for use by community health workers, and a desktop application for use by supervisors to view and submit reports to the Health Management Information System, dispense and monitor community health worker supplies and view community health worker performance. CHiP is expected to positively impact the disease burden through increased coverage and quality of care in Zambia. 📱 Congratulations to the #PATHZambia team on an incredible event and to the Ministry of Health of Zambia on your visionary leadership in creating a resilient and equitable health system.

We recently had the opportunity to hear from two changemakers in the AI space as part of our G20 Health Working Group event on #AI4Health. Each gave us a unique glimpse into how locally-led technologies like LLMs are making a real impact on people’s health. In this first video, with an introduction from Zameer Brey of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Audere CEO Dino Rech shares how AI is revolutionizing HIV counseling by providing accurate, safe, and reliable information for adolescent girls and young women—when they need it, where they need it, and the way they need it. Check out Dino’s remarks below and listen for the one thing he suggests the #G20 can do to ensure equitable #AI4Health. 📲 Immunization programs can utilize digital tools such as SMS gateways and mobile platforms to promote vaccination through hyper-local targeted messaging. But what kinds of messages are most effective for these tools to use? What are the barriers to immunization in different communities? 🔎 As part of the Digital Results Improve Vaccine Equity and Demand (DRIVE Demand) project, Digital Square partnered with Busara to conduct behavioral research on vaccine hesitancy and intention in four countries. The results were packaged into a Practitioner's Playbook to inform digitally enabled social and behavior change (SBC) approaches. 💡 Hear from Busara to learn about their methods, findings, and this new resource for immunization, digital health, and SBC health practitioners in an upcoming webinar: 📅 Thursday, June 27 🕘 9am EST / 4pm EAT ➡ Register: https://lnkd.in/erYB89Na #VaccinesWork #SBC #digitalhealth Rowan Harrity Julia Hammann Heidi Good Gregory Kuzmak
