Why Every Brand Needs Motion Guidelines You’ve probably heard of brand guidelines — a critical asset for any brand. Perhaps just as important are motion guidelines - a visual toolkit for motion graphics and animations across brand touch-points. When implemented properly, these guidelines enhance messaging clarity, empowers creative teams and ensures brand consistency. Motion Guidelines include: • Intro/Outro Cards • Title Cards • Typography • Logo Reveals • Transitions/Behaviors • Social Post Templates Some of my favorite Motion Guidelines: • Intuit Mailchimp by DIA Studio: bit.ly/3NZShAfPinterest by DIA Studio: bit.ly/46NFJ7ASeatGeek by Luke Stanley: bit.ly/46AKXTQ #branding #motionguidelines #visualidentity #marketing #brandstrategy #motiondesign

Last month, I had the pleasure of visiting the Walker Art Center and lecturing about the inner workings of DIA Studio & Monkey Type. The lecture is loosely focused on the concept of "Collaboration." I broke down the theory and process behind our studio's work, where music, rhythm, choreography, and physics are a creative platform for us to approach graphic design with motion & interaction , AKA "Kinetic Identity". Additionally, I discuss how my practice as a type designer serves as the grounding force of DIA's craftsmanship. Slow, methodical design (type design & typography) Fast and futuristic production (coding, generative tools & animation) are fused to inform our aesthetic decisions. Lastly, in the talk, I share how our process has been applied in a pedagogical context. A handful of experimental case studies that were done while teaching at ECAL University of Art and Design Lausanne, HEAD – Genève, University of Art and Design & Royal Academy of Art, The Hague | Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (KABK) I'll announce a few more lectures planned for this fall soon - however, they will unlikely be recorded for public viewing. For those of you who want a behind-the-scenes look at our work and have an hour or so to spare, I highly recommend checking this one out. And a big thanks to Mark Owens and the rest of the Walker team for the invite and being wonderful hosts. Definitely made the long trek to Minneapolis worth it! Enjoy!

Introducing www.tools.dia.tv Starting around 2015, we began exploring the possibility of creating generative software for our client projects. We've always felt shackled by the standard design software we use daily. Companies like Adobe monopolize most of our design tasks, forcing us to work within that box. Our studio made a strategic transition about ten years ago, moving away from directing commercials, film titles, and network branding to focus on more traditional design and branding projects. On the surface, that leap seemed counterintuitive both financially and in terms of our day-to-day skill set. However, this transition was a testament to our foresight, as it foreshadowed what we have come to expect as commonplace in branding in 2024. We carried our expertise in visual effects, 2D & 3D animation, and commercial directing and fused that directly into classic design skill sets for branding, with a particular focus on typography and type design. Our projects for A-Trak, Nike, and Squarespace between 2015-2018 reshaped the industry's approach to brand identity, where motion, interactivity, and generative design have now become front and center across the industry today. This paradigm shift was simply made by disrupting the design toolset we used at the time. We took our understanding of graphic design and typography and put it through a unique technical pipeline foreign to most design studios utilizing an unconventional use of tools like Cinema 4D, After Effects, Houdini, TouchDesigner, etc... We also began developing custom tools through various coding languages like JavaScript. P5, ThreeJS, PaperJS, OpenFrameworks, etc., to build our design sketches. In the world of VFX and Film, these approaches were commonplace back at the beginning of my career in the early 2000s, but the full leap into branding/graphic design had yet to be connected. Since our first gradient generator software for Primary (2015), almost all our projects have included generative tools or applications that have been part of asset delivery. However, aside from our Squarespace Secret7s project (2017), all of our generative software has been strictly limited to client use. Today, we are thrilled to announce the launch of an online archive and research platform (tools.dia.tv). This platform is designed to share iterations of tools we've developed in the past or are currently part of our research & development. The archive features three tools: 1. Scan, based on our first project for A-Trak and Nike; 2. Tangle, Inspired by our Visual Identity for MoMa's "It Wasn't Written," and 3. Ouroboros, inspired by a post for an ECAL lecture. These are just the first of many tools to come! This archive intends to give the public access to some of DIA's behind-the-scenes work; each tool is available online to play with and explore. All tools in this archive are DIA's exclusive property. Unauthorized commercial use is prohibited. Hope you enjoy!

Stoked to be heading to the US next week to visit the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis for their Insights Design Lecture series. I'll be sharing how "collaboration" has been integral to DIA Studio since its inception. The most gratifying moments come when I witness the brilliant people around me bringing ideas to life, especially in a collective environment. My years of performing and recording jazz in NYC helped me tune in to this. As a jazz musician, you aim to support the music, listen, react, and converse with an ensemble. When an ensemble fully immerses in a creative flow, the sum is always greater than the parts. It's never about "I"; it's always about the Art - the ego dissolves when the performance is done wholeheartedly. This training was applied directly to the DIA studio right from its inception. Every single project is navigated as a democratic team. Each individual has a specific strength and point of view that fits into a greater ensemble, elevating the work beyond the original brief or idea. Beyond any beautiful case study, accolade, or final project, the one thing that continues to inspire me is seeing the creativity of the people around me blossom and seeing work develop far more interesting than any idea I had in mind. This is only possible when you develop a space and mutual trust environment. Just like in a recording session, the interpretation of a chart is individual to each person. I'm just a pianist and composer. The drummer, saxophonist, bassist, and other instrumentalists were selected because of an admiration for their talent. Just let them do what they do best! Then, as a group, the real fun begins! Special thanks to Mark Owens for the invite! And a shout out to Daniel Wenzel for developing the crazy psychedelic tool for this animation and Monkey Type for providing a pre-release version of MNKY George for the post.
