Driving River Restoration with Water Leasing at Deschutes River Conservancy Our Annual Water Leasing Program is a cornerstone of our efforts to enhance the Deschutes River and its tributaries. In 2023, we leased nearly 65 cubic feet per second of water, and we are setting our sights on achieving 80 CFS in 2024! 🌊📈 This program is essential for sustaining stream flows in vital waterways such as Whychus Creek and Tumalo Creek during the dry season. 🌾💧 We invite you to join us in supporting these critical initiatives that breathe new life into our rivers. Together, we can ensure a thriving ecosystem and a sustainable future for our communities. 🐟🌍 Our leasing program is funded in part by Intel Corporation, Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and others. Thank you! #SustainableFutures #RiverHealth #DeschutesRiverConservancy #WaterLeasing

In Central Oregon, eight irrigation districts and the city of Prineville have committed to the Deschutes Basin Habitat Conservation Plan, a collaborative effort with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conserve water by piping canals, enhancing the Deschutes River habitat for wildlife, and adhering to strict future water release goals despite concerns about the pace of progress. “We do have a good path forward. There are a lot of projects that have already been completed and more on the way,” said Deschutes River Conservancy Program Director, Jim Bond. “There are a lot of very committed, smart and hard-working groups taking this on, and that gives me a lot of confidence.” #habitatconservationplan #centraloregon #river #Oregonspottedfrog #hcp #conservation #canalpiping #deschutesriver #irrigation #collaboration

Drought Update: For the first time in over three years, our region has started June without drought conditions, according to the National Integrated Drought Information System. This marks a significant moment for our local farmers, ranchers, and water-dependent businesses. However, the fight against drought is far from over. Despite recent improvements in reservoir levels and near-normal precipitation in the past year, the spring brought less rainfall than expected, and groundwater levels remain critically low. This signals that drought conditions could potentially reemerge. At the Deschutes River Conservancy, we continue to prioritize the restoration of streamflow and improvement of water quality throughout the Deschutes Basin. These varying climatic conditions underscore the importance of innovative, sustainable water management strategies to address both current and future challenges. We encourage our partners, stakeholders, and the community to stay engaged and proactive. Together, we can develop and implement resilient solutions that ensure long-term water sustainability for our region.
