Defense Innovation Board experts might soon conduct new studies delving into complex military drone topics, two officials confirmed following a closed-door meeting this week in which uncrewed systems-related challenges dominated much of the discussion. During a roundtable with a small group of reporters hosted by the Defense Writers Group shortly after that meeting concluded, DIB members Michael Mullen — a retired Navy admiral and former chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff — and technology investment executive Charles Phillips shed light on what participants addressed behind closed doors. https://hubs.li/Q02HQjDj0

Some Pentagon components appear to be unaffected by outages to Microsoft systems caused by a faulty update to CrowdStrike’s Falcon security software, but the Department of Defense says it is still closely watching its IT systems in the meantime. “DoD is aware of the reporting and personnel are monitoring our networks for possible impacts. For operational security reasons, we do not comment on the status of our network operations, information systems or operations to assess cyber threats,” a department spokesperson told DefenseScoop in an email. https://hubs.li/Q02HQfPz0

A recent exercise in the Pacific region provided the U.S. military and international partners one of the first chances to truly game out the Pentagon’s new warfare concept for connecting forces and capabilities on a grand scale. Valiant Shield, which occurred in mid-June, is a biennial exercise focused on integration between the services in a multi-domain environment in the Pacific region. This year’s exercise, the tenth such event, involved multinational partners for the first time. It allowed American forces and foreign militaries — including participation from U.S. Space Command and U.S. Transportation Command — to focus on real-world events while testing concepts such as Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2), which envisions how systems across the entire battlespace from all the services and key international partners could be more effectively and holistically networked to provide the right data to commanders, faster. https://hubs.li/Q02HQvHf0

The Defense Department will soon kick off a new “challenge” related to its Global Information Dominance Experiments (GIDE) as officials look to bring additional vendors into the mix, according to the officer overseeing the initiative. The U.S. military has been conducting GIDE events for several years, but the pace has picked up recently as Pentagon leaders prioritize capabilities that will enable a warfighting construct known as Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2), which seeks to more seamlessly connect the data streams of the U.S. military services and key allies and partners for better and faster decision-making. The department’s Chief Digital and AI Office has been put in charge of the events, which also feature the department’s various combatant commands across the world. https://hubs.ly/Q02HQm_c0

The Army recently set out to standardize its data formats for an annual cyber experimentation to not only reduce integration challenges, but prove this type of standardization can be done. The effort was part of the annual Cyber Quest event held earlier this month at Fort Eisenhower, Georgia. Cyber Quest is an experimentation venue where the Army seeks to test emerging technologies on either existing or desired capabilities brought by contractors that respond to specific problem statements from the service in order to help inform future requirements and concepts. https://hubs.ly/Q02HQjxd0

Enhancing the Joint Force’s technology arsenal and infrastructure in the Arctic marks a key pillar in the Defense Department’s new approach for operating in that complex, rapidly changing region. Pentagon leadership on Monday issued the 2024 Arctic Strategy, which aims to guide the military’s path forward as it adapts to the unfolding and intensifying geopolitical and geophysical shifts in the security environment — particularly in and around U.S. territory in Alaska and allied hubs in the High North. https://hubs.li/Q02HQbTM0
