“As the central nervous system is the body’s processing center, DCHR is the District government’s processing center, from policy to human resources solutions and every other administration in between. Talent acquisition is just one aspect but that is key within the Human Resources Solutions Administration (HRSA). HRSA partners with sister agencies throughout the recruitment process ensuring that the most qualified applicant is selected. As such, it is my responsibility to advise and provide guidance, while following District’s regulations, to the HR community. I enjoy working with agency staff. It is so gratifying come “new hire orientation Monday” (sometimes Tuesday if Monday was a holiday) to see all of the smiling faces as they begin their employment journey with the District. This is all possible because of DCHR.”

Thus, I was meant to be right where I am in DCHR as I close out a career that has taken me truly through a journey well beyond my expectations. Over the past 10 years, DCHR allowed me the space to revisit the highlights of my career so that I can apply all that I have learned to the benefits of amazing people in the district. From 1983 to 1990, my work was focus on supporting young people in high school to transition successfully to post-secondary opportunities. I had the pleasure of creating our high school program. From 1997 to 2010, a great deal of my work was focus on education, Pell grant, and economic development with an emphasis on workforce development. Once again, DCHR allowed the opportunity to create the Job Circle and Services for residents in search of employment. I was also given the latitude to serve Upper-level undergraduate students and graduate students to explore their post graduate career paths. Since 1997, I have been doing the work of undoing racism, equity, and social justice. I can proudly say that I had a hand in the creation of our Office of Racial Equity. Through the aforementioned work as well as my engagement and interaction with many public servants in my classes, I was truly indulging in my passion. This past 10 years have been truly about living out my passion professionally, personally, and socially. I am thankful for all that I have experience as a public servant within the District of Columbia Human Resources alongside some truly innovative, devout, committed, and resilient public servants. “Love what you do and do what you love.
