Thanks to LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired for an amazing site tour! 🌟 Based in San Francisco, LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired provides education, training, advocacy, and community for blind and low-vision individuals. Exploring their research labs, tech studios, and commercial kitchens helped to expand our awareness of cross-disability access needs and opportunities for blind, low-vision, and blind/deaf individuals—including the importance of acoustic design for spaces to support wayfinding and communication. At MADLab—their Media and Accessible Design Lab—we got to see and touch tactile signs, maps, and art created by LHFTB designers. A big shout-out to MADLab for creating tactile maps for some of our recent community meetings and for making us one for our SF studio! Great conversations at the Bay Area Science Collaborative (BABSC)! DBA Associate Erin Feeney spoke on the panel "Layer By Layer: Sustainability & Performance in Rainscreen Design," sharing insights about building science, energy performance, and constructibility to help architects navigate the decision-making process when designing a rainscreen system.

I feel honored to have had the opportunity to attend a DESIGN & ADVOCACY panel discussion at AIA San Francisco two weeks ago, at the CA D space. “Lessons from the work of Marsha Maytum” The panel was moderated by Gwen Fuertes of LEDDY MAYTUM STACY Architects featuring three panelists ANGELA BROOKS BROOKS SCARPA ARCHITECTS, Katie Ackerly David Baker Architects, and Lindsay Baker International Living Future Institute. This lively discussion was a celebration of the impact that Marsha Maytum, FAIA has had on the role of the architect in society, beyond just "form makers”, and was deeply inspiring. William Leddy, FAIA provided some incredibly touching closing remarks.  “You can design one building at a time and, of course, they have an impact. But the impact you can have beyond the property line of your buildings is equally, if not more, significant.”  - Marsha Maytum, FAIA, 1954-2024 ⋆⋆☆⋆⋆ I spent an additional half hour at the center following the panel viewing the special exhibit showcasing Marsha Maytum's reflections on design and advocacy, and the importance of our role in leading communities toward a just, resilient, carbon neutral future for all.
