  • Yesterday, our Associate Director of Programs and Operations, Neeraja Penumetcha, attended the AI Dialogues Session 2: "Understanding the Risks of AI/ML in Conventional and Social Media, including from a Gender Lens" organized by the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data and Development Gateway: An IREX Venture. This session highlighted the urgent challenges posed by misinformation and disinformation, driven by advanced AI and ML technologies, which threaten democratic societies and gender equality. One particularly alarming consequence is technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV), which undermines efforts to ensure the safety and dignity of women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals.   Some key takeaways from the session include:   Incorporating Gender-Balanced Data: Prioritizing gender-balanced data in AI training is crucial to prevent the perpetuation of existing gender inequalities. Building and Sharing Tailored Tools: AI tools can extend and expand the ways data is used responsibly, addressing online threats to women, and bringing together disparate data sets in innovative ways. Multidisciplinary Approach: Including women in decision-making processes and actively involving gender experts ensures diverse perspectives in AI development. Ethical Considerations: Deliberate inclusion of diverse gender perspectives in training datasets is essential to create AI technologies that promote gender equality.   We are grateful to GPSDD and Development Gateway for facilitating these vital discussions. The common threads surfaced in these dialogues will shape future events and inform an action agenda for inclusive AI in development. Stay tuned for more insights and collaborative efforts to harness AI for gender equality!   #AIDialogues #GenderEquality #EthicalAI

  • Excited to share some insights from the Gender Data Network webinar today, hosted by Data2x, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Open Data Watch, PARIS21, ESCAP, and IDinsight!   The session highlighted the critical importance of gender-sensitive data in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting equity, and influencing policy decisions. Here are some key takeaways:   🔹 Importance of Gender Data: Sarah Lucas from DataDelta emphasized how gender data is essential for achieving SDGs and its impact on equity and policy decisions. The role of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) in collecting and utilizing this data is pivotal.   🔹 Case Studies: Diksha Radhakrishnan and Mikka Hipol from DataDelta shared practical examples where gender-sensitive data collection revealed differential experiences and the importance of making administrative data more gender-sensitive.   🔹 Field Insights: Priavi Joshi and Nakubyana Mungomba from IDinsight discussed their experiences in creating gender-balanced enumerator teams and the links between enumerator gender and data quality. Insights from surveys in Africa highlighted the importance of respecting female respondents during data collection.   This webinar was a great opportunity to learn from experts and understand the hidden power of gender data. A big thank you to all the speakers for sharing their knowledge and to the fellow organizers for hosting such a valuable session. Let's continue to strive for gender equity through more inclusive data practices! 💪📈   #GenderData #SDGs #Equity

  • We attended the incredibly insightful PARIS21 webinar this morning on "AI through the lens of official statistics and the SDGs: What are the benefits and risks?". We heard presentations from Dilek Fraisl who presented on her recent paper for PARIS21 as well as Samuel Annim and his work as the Government Statistician of Ghana.    The discussion highlighted the transformative potential of AI in accelerating progress towards the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. From enhancing well-being and economic productivity to addressing critical issues like healthcare, education, and climate change, AI's promise is immense. Yet, the ethical and societal implications—such as quality and trust, governance challenges, privacy issues, job displacement, and unequal access—cannot be overlooked.   Key case studies highlighted include Ghana’s Marine Plastic Litter Initiative 🌊, which utilizes drones, citizen science, and AI for targeted interventions to eliminate plastic pollution, and the Swiss Federal Statistical Office’s StatBot.swiss Chatbot 🤖, developed to facilitate public access and understanding of harmonized government data. Recommendations included: Document initiatives and risks, build AI communities of practice, develop clear policies and guidelines, and support the modernization of National Statistical Systems to become "AI-ready."   At Data2X, we focus on navigating AI’s role in advancing gender equality in technology by addressing gender data disparities and fostering collaboration to create informed policies and strategies.
