With 26% of Americans living with a disability, the ADA was an instrumental step towards equal access to spaces, services and opportunities for those with disabilities. One week before #CraigGrad Jackie was due to give birth to her first child in May 2023, she experienced a ruptured aneurysm, leading to a brain injury and an emergency C-section. Shortly after waking from a coma, Jackie, alongside her husband Austin and newborn baby Knoxly, began her recovery journey at Craig. After her brain injury, Jackie experienced expressive aphasia, which made it difficult to produce language but easier to vocalize though song. Music therapy became a vital part of her recovery, helping her bond with Knoxly through a lullaby of her and her family's making. "Having to adjust to motherhood in recovery has been its own unique struggle," Jackie shares. "But through every rep of physical therapy, every session with my speech therapist, and every doctor’s visit, I thought about the mother she deserves, and it pushed me a little harder.” Now back home in California, Jackie is working each day to regain skills and independence. Knoxly recently turned one, and Jackie continues to show her resilience: "The world is filled with unexplainable tragedies and many of us have difficult paths to walk, but there is always hope. As a single mom, #CraigGrad Ashley was determined to regain her independence and care for her son with less dependence on others. That's when she came to Craig's donor-supported Driving and Adaptive Transportation Program! “For 20 years, I depended on others to drive me around,” Ashley says. “But finally, I can drive myself and my 14-year-old son, Collin. Five years ago in Seattle, #CraigGrad Ryker sustained a traumatic brain injury after crashing in a skateboarding accident without a helmet. We had an incredible time at Craig Hospital's fourth annual Rec at the Res! ☀️ Our amazing recreational therapists and interdisciplinary staff took 46 Craig inpatients to Cherry Creek State Park for a day of adaptive fun, including biking, fishing, kayaking, cycling, boating and hiking. This event isn't just about having fun—it's about empowering our patients and their caregivers to develop skills and work toward their recreation and rehabilitation goals. And yes, having fun along the way is a huge bonus! This year, we also hosted a hospital-wide block party to celebrate the summer with the Craig community. After 40 years in neurorehabilitation, including a decade as Craig Hospital’s workers’ compensation manager, Perry Ann Williams has announced her retirement this August. “Retirement is bittersweet,” Perry Ann reflects, expressing gratitude to those she's worked with over the years. Stepping into Perry Ann’s role will be Tracey Jensen, a certified brain injury specialist with 25 years of experience in workers’ compensation and neurorehabilitation who has been a part of the Craig Hospital Provider Relations team since 2019. As Perry Ann retires, she shares some imparting wisdom: "Don’t sweat the small stuff. Count your blessings. Life after a catastrophic injury is a marathon, not a sprint. Do your homework on finding specialty care for your health care needs. It’s a complicated health care world. Thank you all for the lives you help rebuild and for teaching others to live successfully with ‘a new normal.’” We’re also thrilled to welcome Rene' Mills MS CCC-SLP, CBIST to the Provider Relations team during this transition!
