How do #virtualpowerplants including #demandresponse work? As many head to the skies for summer travel, let’s compare an overbooked flight with a peak in energy demand. When a flight gets overbooked, it’s more efficient for the airline to pay passengers to voluntarily give up their seats than to add a flight. Similarly, grid operators can meet demand peaks by paying energy users to reduce electricity consumption during high-demand periods, rather than firing up new fossil-fueled peaker plants.
