He leads by example, making a real difference in our hospital community. Recently, Joey received the CoxHealth Partners Spirit Award. From the nomination: "We have a patient who will only drink decaffeinated coffee, but the hospital does not keep it in stock. Joey took it upon himself to drive to the store to purchase the requested coffee. The patient was very happy and thankful that he would have decaffeinated coffee to drink while he was hospitalized. This is not the only time Joey has been helpful; he does it all the time. Joey continually goes out of his way to accommodate patients' dietary needs and wants. He also works many extra shifts and will always greet you with a smile, no matter how tired he is. Joey is dedicated to excellence and a valued member of our hospital team." Medical laboratory scientists play a crucial role in health care. To understand this profession, they are often considered puzzle masters or detectives solving cases. The duties of these highly trained professionals encompass collecting samples and performing a variety of laboratory tests on specimens so clinicians can accurately diagnose, monitor, and treat patients' medical conditions.  Staffing key medical positions, such as medical laboratory scientists, is a significant concern for hospitals nationwide. From nurses to scientists, health systems are finding success in recruiting internationally.  Cox Barton County Hospital recently welcomed two highly skilled new team members who have proven to be a perfect fit for our small hospital and rural community. Jane and LJ have filled crucial positions in the laboratory that have been vacant for over a year. If you haven’t met our international team members yet, you need to meet them! We love a celebration! Last week, CoxHealth hosted GNR Welcome Events in Springfield and Branson for Graduate Nurse Residents who will be part of the January 2025 cohort. Attendees had the opportunity to visit with nursing leaders from their new department, learn about student loan repayment options and enjoy a treat. "It's always an exciting time to see GNRs finish out nursing school and start their new career path. This week, our Respiratory Care team had the opportunity to give a guest lecture for Respiratory Therapy students at Missouri Southern State University. The lecture included a demonstration of arterial line insertions and more techniques practiced by CoxHealth RTs. "We enjoy the opportunity to invest in new RRTs that will be entering the workforce, passing along knowledge in the hopes that this will help them grow and become the kind of therapists that we would be relieved to see take care of a loved one some day," says Joel Sutherland, supervisor, Respiratory Care. Over the past two years, RTs at CoxHealth have worked to expand their skills in order to utilize the full scope of their licenses. "Arterial line insertion is vitally important for quick, accurate monitoring of critically ill patients. Often times, critical care physicians experience such high workloads, and they have difficulty getting to the bedside. Having qualified Respiratory Therapists available for arterial line insertion ensures timely response for those patients in rapid decline," says Julie Lawson, assistant director, Respiratory Care.
