Did you know that synthetic apparel causes more than 10 times more plastic leakage than cotton garments across the garment life cycle? The predicted increases in synthetic fiber production and usage will drastically worsen plastic pollution. As a significant source of plastic leakage into our oceans, waterways, and soil, the apparel industry has a critical role to play in reducing plastic leakage. Ultimately, the apparel industry needs to ramp up its efforts towards true circularity and prioritize the use of natural fibers like #cotton to transition to natural and renewable materials and limit plastic pollution. The back-to-school season is upon us, and retailers and brands can look forward to increased consumer spending this year. Parents are expected to lay out $472 on school clothes alone, up from $378 last year, according to Cotton Incorporated’s 2024 Lifestyle Monitor™ Survey. Despite their plan to spend more, shoppers will be on the lookout for deals, and will be keeping mass merchants like Target and Walmart, as well as off-pricers busy. Embrace sustainability with style this Plastic Free July. This 100% cotton blister knit is dyed in a cool shade of green and features an intricate surface texture created by “pocket” blisters in the knit structure. Garment processing has allowed for differential shrinkage to occur, providing maximum textural effects. As we celebrate Plastic Free July, let’s take a step forward in reducing plastic waste and embracing natural fibers, like 100% cotton, that are kind to our planet. It may be time for Plastic Free July, but industry experts say global consumption of synthetic apparel – petroleum-based clothes like polyester that release microplastic particles – is on target to increase unless the industry addresses the issue. Research shows fully 75 percent of consumers say it’s important their apparel be made from materials that can biodegrade. Studies at both North Carolina State University and Cornell University determined cotton biodegrades strikingly quickly, especially when compared to polyester. Read about fashion’s microplastic pollution issue and consumers’ preferred clothing fabrics in the latest Lifestyle Monitor™. https://lnkd.in/eU97hQEh #CottonIncorporated #LifestyleMonitor #PlasticFreeJuly #sustainability #naturalfibers #microplasticpollution

Did you know that natural fibers like cotton can help fight plastic #pollution? Plastic leakage from synthetic fiber-based garments occurs at each stage of clothing’s life cycle. Meanwhile, for #cotton garments, #plastic leakage mainly comes from packaging end-of-life. Additionally, synthetic seasonal garments generate even more leakage than standard garments due to their shorter lifespan.
