Six New Yorkers experiencing homelessness are suing the NYC Mayor Adams administration for their inhumane encampment sweeps. The lawsuit alleges that the City’s sweeps policy and the practices that follow are unconstitutional and violate individuals’ civil rights. Everyone deserves a safe place to sleep. When people are moved unnecessarily and lose critical possessions, it hurts their health and safety and makes the problem worse. By investing in housing and supportive services, cities can address the homelessness crisis while reducing the use of crisis systems and improving public safety. Housing and services are proven solutions to homelessness that shift communities away from expensive, temporary fixes to cost-effective, lasting solutions.
