Your favorite Lord of the Rings character says a LOT about you. I ask candidates who their favorite LOTR character is during the first interview. Contrary to what you might think, there is a right answer to this question. The most common answers are Gandalf, Aragorn, Frodo, and Sam. These are solid answers and great characters but incorrect nonetheless. Sauron is a very inspiring character but this is also not the right answer. The best Lord of the Rings character is Pippin Took, "PIP" for short. The word PIP just brings joy to my heart and puts a smile on my face. Whenever I see PIP on the screen I think about putting someone on a PIP. The thought alone delights me and that's why PIP is my favorite character. #leadership #motivation #lordoftherings #movies #thoughtleadership

I recently surveyed over 3,000 people who used to work for me. It turns out that every single person who has ever worked for me hates my guts. However, there are three factors that I believe are potentially skewing the data. Each of these factors may be causing them to dislike me more than they should. 1) Everyone who has ever worked for me was either put on a PIP or fired. 2) Many of these people are lazy bastards who prefer working from home. 3) Many had lives outside of work so they weren’t committed to the company. There were many other factors but these were the big ones that stood out. After I weighed these three factors in, I realized what I’ve known all along... They are the problem. Not me.

One of the major benefits of being a manager is having a group of people to take your insecurities out on. I have insecurities just like anybody else but they don’t affect me because I constantly take them out on my team. I used to keep all of my insecurities bottled up inside of me and they would be screaming to get out but I stopped having that problem once I became a manager. One of my insecurities is feeling that I am inadequate and that I am simply not good enough. I began having this feeling back in high school and even elementary school and it would bubble up inside from time to time. This feeling of not being good enough followed me throughout college and into my early adult years when I entered the working world. It wasn’t until I started managing a team of people that I was able to mitigate this insecurity and start to feel better about myself. I now channel my feelings of low self worth and inadequacy by blaming my team for my shortcomings and mistakes. Whenever my team isn’t performing, it’s not my fault, it’s their fault. Whenever my team isn’t improving, it’s not my fault, it’s their fault. I don’t think I’ll ever be “cured” but blaming my team certainly helps so I recommend it to anyone who is going through this.
