Dr. Alejandro Quiroga, President of Corewell Health in West Michigan, shares his reflections on Hispanic Heritage Month and the importance of diverse perspectives in health care:

Imagine a world where stepping outside could mean risking severe health effects from the sun's unfiltered rays. This wasn't a distant possibility in a dystopian future—it was a looming reality a few decades ago, when scientists discovered a growing hole in the ozone layer. But thanks to the visionary work of Mario J. Molina, a Mexican-born chemist, and his relentless pursuit of a solution, we changed course.   Molina’s groundbreaking research identified chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as the culprit behind ozone depletion. This discovery was more than a scientific breakthrough; it rallied nations to action. The Montreal Protocol, which emerged from his findings, stands as a testament to what we can achieve when the world unites behind science and common sense. Today, we see the fruits of that unity: the ozone layer is healing, expected to return to its pre-1980 strength by 2060, securing a safer environment for future generations.   This narrative of recovery and resilience is particularly poignant as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. It reminds us of the vital contributions made by individuals from all corners of the world, contributions that transcend borders and benefit humanity universally. Molina’s legacy is a powerful illustration of how diverse perspectives are crucial in solving global challenges. His work is not just a scientific milestone; it is a beacon of hope, showing us that informed, committed individuals can indeed make a difference.   I am a proud executive champion of the Fusion Business Resource Group. Part of my passion and purpose as a leader is to be an inclusion champion for all our team members, so there are no unheard voices within the walls of Corewell Health. I encourage each of you to be leaders in your own right, to find your own voice in the chorus that shapes our future and to take action that leaves a lasting impact.   This past week, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Fusion BRG hosted Marcela Aldaz-Matos, MBA as a keynote speaker. Marcela's presentation, titled "Honoring Heritage, Inspiring Future: Hispanic Voices in Healthcare," emphasized the importance of valuing diverse perspectives and life experiences to enrich one another's lives. Together, we have the power to shape a future where every voice is heard, and every contribution is valued. Let’s make that future a reality, both within our organization and beyond.

This month, we celebrated the groundbreaking of a major expansion and renovation to the Corewell Health Greenville Hospital Cancer Care Center, made possible by a generous gift of $4.2 million from the Braman family. The W.H. Braman Cancer Care Center will provide patients with top-notch care and the best possible patient experience with amenities to help them not only be treated and heal, but to feel human as they go along that journey. The expansion will increase infusion and exam spaces to accommodate the growing demand for cancer care and infusion services in the area.

We’re celebrating Healthcare Simulation Week at Corewell Health! Our simulation teams provided demonstrations today in the lobby at the Butterworth Hospital campus. We were happy to share with curious employees and visitors what our high-fidelity manikins are and what they can do. From medical students wanting to learn more about what Corewell Health can offer them as future resident physicians- in- training to wide-eyed visiting children curious about the talking and blinking manikins, our team was excited to increase awareness to the benefits of utilizing simulation as a teaching methodology. It was heart-warming when another visitor stopped by to share about lifesaving care his spouse received and thank us for our part in what we do to train our health care teams. What a great way to spend a few hours at work! Thank you to all our simulation professionals for what you do each and every day!

Corewell Health Talent Attraction ambassadors, leaders, team members and volunteers from across the state volunteered for two days this week to engage Detroit area high school students in health care career exploration activities. Hosted at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan and in partnership with Usher's New Look Organization and Afterschool Alliance hundreds of students showed up to learn about different careers. Usher, the American singer-songwriter and dancer, even made an appearance and talk to students about their passions and how to make a career out of them.
