About us
More than 13 million children live in food-insecure households, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These children and their families lack consistent access to enough food to live active, healthy lives. The effects of food insecurity are wide-ranging, from the painful feeling of hunger to serious implications for children’s physical and mental health, academic achievement, and future economic prosperity. CoreGiving is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to eliminating child hunger by providing nourishing meals to children and families through partnerships with food banks and other hunger-relief organizations across the United States.

For instance, 1 in 3 middle-income households in the Washington metro area, earning $100K-$150K, are now food insecure. Together with Blackstone and 16 of its portfolio companies, we’re turning insight into action on CoreGiving Day this October. Hunger saw a dramatic rise in the greater Washington region over the last year. The Capital Area Food Bank’s new #HungerReport2024 reveals that a staggering 37% of households in our region didn’t know where their next meal was coming from – a 5 percentage point increase from last year's report. Despite many positive economic headlines, there are enormous numbers of our neighbors experiencing a different reality. The new findings mean that nearly 1.5 million neighbors are experiencing food insecurity. Some key takeaways from our new Hunger Report: ▪ Hunger increased throughout our region, with no less than 23% of residents in any county struggling to access enough food. In Prince George's County, MD, a staggering 50% are facing food insecurity. ▪ The starkest jumps in food insecurity rates were among middle-income households earning $100k-$150k a year. At the median household income level (about $121k), 1 in 3 households are food insecure. This is up from 1 in 5 just last year. ▪ A college degree isn’t enough to prevent food insecurity—more than half of those facing hunger have some college education or a degree. ▪ Communities of color continue to be disproportionately impacted, with people of color 2-3x more likely to experience food insecurity than white people in our region. ▪ Retraction of government benefits, persistent inflation, and ongoing employment challenges are causing increased financial strain, directly affecting households already experiencing food insecurity. ▪ Addressing these rising rates of food insecurity requires coordinated action across all sectors. Recommended strategies include maintaining and strengthening federal programs that support food insecurity, supporting policies that improve economic hardships holistically, and investing in upskilling the food insecure population. On National Food Bank Day, we celebrate the legacy of our partner, St. Mary's Food Bank, the first-ever food bank established in 1967 by John van Hengel in Phoenix, AZ. Inspired by a young mother’s struggle to feed her children, Van Hengel envisioned a “food bank” where surplus food could be “deposited” by individuals and businesses and “withdrawn” by those in need. Today, we honor all food banks and the incredible employees who help children and families access the food and nutrition they need. We also look forward to joining forces with over 70 food banks next month, dedicating our time and energy on CoreGiving Day to support their vital mission. #NationalFoodBankDay #CoreGivingDay #EndHungerTogether

As the school year kicks off, we’re honored to have sponsored Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee’s Hunger Free Summer campaign, which provided an incredible 6.7 million meals to children and families in need. One of those children is Jerick, a sixth grader with big dreams of becoming a professional soccer player. Jerick knows that proper nutrition is key to his athletic success, and he’s grateful for the support he receives from Second Harvest's Kids Cafe. This program offers free meals, snacks, and essential nutrition education to children facing hunger, both during the school year and over the summer. While Jerick enjoys his gummy worms, he also understands that vegetables give him the energy and strength to chase his dreams. At CoreGiving, we’re committed to making a difference year-round.
