About us
COOKFOX Architects is a studio dedicated to a vision of integrated, environmentally responsive design. Guided by a passion for design excellence and a belief in the collaborative process, COOKFOX seeks select projects that fundamentally re-think how buildings interact with people and the natural environment. Starting with intensive research, we seek to understand each project in its environmental, cultural, and contemporary context, so that our work may engage with layers of time and a strong sense of place. Inspired by concepts such as biophilia, we are pursuing architecture that goes beyond LEED to restore, regenerate, and contribute to the urban environment.

Bethany Borel, Associate Partner at COOKFOX, says: “This project will preserve the art deco history of the building, recover its heritage as place of refuge, and transform its legacy as a place of incarceration into a place for renewal and thriving.” Read more about Liberty Landing in the Architect's Newspaper: https://lnkd.in/egSZZnvD

We look forward to working with Camber Property Group to create much-needed housing for New York's most vulnerable communities.
Camber and Osborne Association are proud to announce our team’s proposal, Liberty Landing, has been selected by Empire State Development to transform the former Bayview Correctional Facility at 550 West 20th Street in Manhattan into 124 units of permanent low-income affordable housing. We look forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting to work with COOKFOX Architects and Urban Atelier Group.

COOKFOX Architects is proud to work with Camber Property Group and Osborne Association on Liberty Landing. This transformative project will convert the former Bayview Correctional Facility in Manhattan into affordable and supportive housing, and the development will include on-site supportive services and a community facility unit. Affordable housing units will provide income-restricted residences for individuals and families, and short-term transitional units will support formerly incarcerated individuals in their reentry into society. As Governor Kathy Hochul said in today’s press release announcing Liberty Landing, “This innovative project will transform a former symbol of incarceration into a beacon of hope, healing, and opportunity.” The site was originally home to a nine-story Seamen’s House YMCA. In 1978, New York State converted it into a women’s prison called the Bayview Correctional Facility. In the site’s next life as affordable and supportive housing, we are excited to recover its history as a place of refuge and to design a healthy, high-performance residence for our most vulnerable neighbors. At 378 West End Avenue, we rehabilitated a 1915-era residential structure and joined it to a new tower that rises above the West End Collegiate Church. Internally, the structures come together as a unified experience, with new and existing floors aligned to create a seamless transition. An amazing series of Pride events with Build Out Alliance in NYC for 2024! From our Pride Kickoff with Urban Land Institute hosted by SHoP Architects, to marching in the twilight Brooklyn Pride parade, to our Pride Pep Rally hosted by COOKFOX Architects at their gorgeous office and roof terrace, to the iconic NYC Pride March in Manhattan, it was quite a month! Pride is certainly a time for celebration, but we must never forget that Pride was born from protest. It is more important than ever to stand up and fight for our rights as LGBTQ people. Within our own industry, there is still much work to be done to make it more welcoming and inclusive, and I’m so proud to lead Build Out Alliance as President as it pursues this important work. Welcome to COOKFOX's new podcast, the Architect's Rolodex. As architects, we’re curious about the built world, but especially the people that activate it. We want to have conversations with passionate professionals about why they do what they do. So, we’ve decided to take conversations that have traditionally happened around the Harvest Kitchen table in our studio to a podcast format. We invite you to listen in on regular conversations with design leaders, colleagues, and all-around great humans as we explore more deeply COOKFOX’s ethos of regenerating and elevating the natural and human condition in our urban environment. Our first episode features Julie Rosen, preservationist and Associate Partner at HIGGINS QUASEBARTH & PARTNERS LLC with COOKFOX Senior Associate Patricia Lozano Quintana, Associate Agathe Ceccaldi, and photographer and cinematographer Alex Ferrec leading the conversation. https://lnkd.in/eWjRExmW
