As a new major player in the energy industry, hydrogen has the potential to revolutionize gas burners in both industrial and residential settings. We’re excited to be supporting professors from the University of Calgary, Drs. Leo Fang and Mustafa M., along with Dr. Sina Kheirkhah from The University of British Columbia, who all recently received a grant to study hydrogen flashback in gas burners. While replacing natural gas with hydrogen in gas burners would significantly reduce carbon emissions, hydrogen flashback poses safety hazards when burner flames propagate backward to where the fuel is being injected. With the support they received, the researchers at UCalgary will investigate hydrogen fuel’s safety profile, as well as its performance in devices like gas turbines and power plants. Read the full article from UCalgary News! https://lnkd.in/gRzGUzJs “It’s rewarding in a sense that we are breaking ground in a new area, so you can think of it like being the first person to climb Everest. I find that very rewarding.” –Dr. Mohamed Interested in learning more about what Convergent Science is doing in the hydrogen industry? Visit our website here! https://convergecfd.com/

As the world increasingly focuses on sustainability, hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines are gaining popularity over traditional fossil fuel engines due to their enhanced energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. In today’s #SimulationFriday video, we show our CONVERGE simulation of high-velocity injection and combustion of hydrogen in the Sandia hydrogen-fueled direct-injection internal combustion engine, as well as the spark ignition process. Modeling hydrogen engines requires overcoming simulation challenges such as hydrogen’s supersonic injection, fast combustion speeds, and complex heat transfer. Our simulation uses SAGE detailed chemistry to accurately capture hydrogen combustion, along with adaptive zoning to accelerate the chemistry calculations. To capture the shock waves and fuel-air mixture, we applied velocity- and temperature-based Adaptive Mesh Refinement, while we used a RANS model to simulate turbulence in the combustion chamber. The Lagrangian-Eulerian Spark Ignition (LESI) model—new in CONVERGE 4—allowed us to accurately and realistically model spark ignition. Want to learn more about how CFD plays a vital role in developing hydrogen combustion systems? Join us at our next webinar on July 10, where our collaborators Vincent Giuffrida and Olivier Colin from IFP Energies nouvelles will describe how they used CONVERGE to optimize H2/air mixing and engine design for heavy-duty applications. This week’s #ThrowbackThursday brings us to a blog post about one man’s dream that he brought to fruition with fierce determination and an innovative team. Greg Kemp, founder and CEO of TORAD Engineering, along with his partner Joseph Orosz, a veteran HVAC compressor engineer, wanted to develop a new compressor technology that was simpler, less expensive, and easier to manufacture. The technology Greg and his team created was a spool compressor, which would simultaneously help shift the industry to low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants. For their CFD testing, they went with CONVERGE, whose autonomous meshing significantly simplifies case setup and enables a quick turnaround on results. CONVERGE helped them gain insight into global compressor parameters such as mass flow rate, power consumption, noise, vibration, thermal design, and leakage. Ultimately, modeling their compressor with CONVERGE helped Greg and his team come up with an improved valve configuration that boosted the efficiency of the compressor. “It’s not an over-exaggeration to say that we owe the success we’ve had over the last year in obtaining higher efficiency results to the work we’ve done with CONVERGE,” Greg said. Interested in learning more about Greg’s experience with us? Read our blog post here! https://lnkd.in/gVaWQZcs As demonstrated by TORAD’s spool compressor, CONVERGE’s unique modeling tools can enable accurate and efficient compressor simulations. On July 17, don’t miss the CONVERGE Workshop: Accelerating Compressor Design With CFD at the 2024 Herrick Conferences. Take advantage of this novel learning experience and secure your spot now! The conference itself will be held at Purdue University from July 15–18. We’ll be exhibiting, so find our booth to discover how CONVERGE can revamp your simulations! https://lnkd.in/g6fk4azV
