Convergent Science is a global leader in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software.

About us

Convergent Science, founded in 1997, is a global leader in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The Convergent Science World Headquarters is located in Madison, WI with additional locations in New Braunfels and Houston, Texas, Northville, Michigan, Linz, Austria, and Pune, India. Its flagship product, CONVERGE, is revolutionizing the CFD industry. The groundbreaking technology removes the user defined mesh and implements an innovative new process that fully couples the automated mesh with the solver at runtime. This process combined with Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) is shifting the paradigm toward predictive CFD. To learn more please visit convergecfd.com.

Scroll compressors operate through the circular movement of a stationary fixed scroll and an orbiting scroll. In today’s #SimulationFriday video, we show CONVERGE’s simulation of a supercritical CO2 scroll compressor, where the gas enters the compressor through the suction port at the top. As the orbiting scroll moves, pockets of gas are trapped between the two scrolls and compressed. When the pressure reaches a certain threshold, the gas exits the compressor through the discharge port. We used CONVERGE’s boundary sealing to close the axial gaps between the scrolls, and Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) to capture the velocity in the radial gaps. CONVERGE’s autonomous meshing, which automatically generates an orthogonal mesh at each time-step to accommodate the moving geometries, increased the accuracy of this compressor simulation while minimizing computational expense. In addition to scroll compressors, CONVERGE’s meshing capabilities and variety of multi-phase models are uniquely suited to model many types of compressors. Effective pollution control systems are critical for meeting stringent emissions limits in a variety of industries. Clair Engineers Pvt Ltd, experts in the design, manufacture, and installation of air pollution control and process equipment, helps companies control particulate matter and gaseous emissions and optimize their industrial processes. In this #ThrowbackThursday blog post, we discuss how Clair was searching for a CFD tool to help them optimize the efficiency of their pollution control equipment. To evaluate CONVERGE, Clair engineers simulated three different devices: an electrostatic precipitator, a bag filter, and a gas cyclone. They ran their simulations on CONVERGE Horizon, our cloud computing platform, which easily accommodated the large simulation domains of their applications. CONVERGE’s autonomous meshing, Adaptive Mesh Refinement, and Under-Relaxation Steady solver proved to be effective and efficient tools for their simulation needs. Next Tuesday, we will host an online webinar on modeling multi-phase flows in positive-displacement compressors. We will show how to use CONVERGE’s unique meshing capabilities to implement a grid control strategy that concentrates cells along the multi-phase interfaces to enhance solution accuracy. In addition to explaining how to model an oil-injected screw compressor and an oil-injected rotary vane compressor, the webinar will also include a live demonstration of how to set up the former in CONVERGE. The deadline to register is quickly approaching, so take advantage of this learning experience and sign up today! https://lnkd.in/gNMMzu3b

In Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems, the expander is a critical component for converting thermal energy into mechanical power. Large-scale ORC systems typically use turbine expanders, while small-scale ORC systems may benefit more from volumetric expanders. Compared to other volumetric machines such as scroll, twin-screw, and vane expanders, single-screw expanders have a longer working life, higher volumetric efficiency, and higher partial loading. In today’s #SimulationFriday video, we simulated a single-screw expander with CONVERGE’s autonomous mesh generation and Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR), which allowed us to easily incorporate different motion profiles and resolve tight clearances between different parts. A real gas model was used to accurately simulate the fluid properties of the high-pressure R-245fa gas, while AMR helped us capture the large velocity gradient. While expanders work to increase the volume of fluid in a system, compressors have the opposite effect– decreasing the volume. Don’t miss our July 30 webinar on positive-displacement compressors, where you can learn more about these mechanical devices that play a crucial role in agriculture, automotive applications, oil and gas, and more. There’s still time– sign up today! https://lnkd.in/gReHKiCg
