THURSDAY THRIVERS: Meet DeMarc Jackson, a 2023 graduate of Jonesboro High School and a laborer with Holder Construction. When DeMarc enrolled in Construction Ready Pre-Apprenticeship training at Perry Career Academy after finishing high school, he suspected a skilled trades career might be just what he was looking for. “I was always interested in doing things with my hands, so I signed up for it,” recalls DeMarc, who learned about Construction Ready from his guidance counselor at JHS. Today, with a year of experience under his belt, DeMarc has no doubt he’s on the right career path. He’s so certain, in fact, that he’s enrolled at Chattahoochee Technical College, where he’ll begin classes in Construction Management next month. He’ll do so while continuing his work for Holder, with whom he’s been helping build the expansive Trilith Live project in Fayette County. Watching the seven-acre entertainment complex take shape, he says, “really helps me out a lot – sticking with one job and seeing the process of how everything is built from start to finish.” When he arrived on the job site, DeMarc remembers “just trying to survive at first. Being new to construction, you don’t know what’s coming or what to do. But everybody here has got your back. If you do something wrong, they tell you how to do it correctly. They’re all so helpful.” Not long after joining the company, DeMarc shared his goals with his superintendent, Scott Cantrell, saying, “This is something I want to do, and I don’t see it as a job, I see it as a career.” Recognizing DeMarc’s potential, Cantrell has taken on a mentor role for the young man. DeMarc explains: “Ever since we had that talk, any tough job that he had, he would give it to me, and if I didn’t know something, he would help me out. He always keeps me on the right path.” Cantrell, in turn, says DeMarc has been “a huge asset to us out here in the field. He keeps driving and improving every day.” Having secured a stable and rewarding job at age 19, DeMarc recently purchased a car for himself, and he enjoys being able to buy birthday and anniversary gifts for his parents. “It just feels nice to give back to my mom and dad,” he says. “They’re very proud of me that I have a job and am doing what I like to do on a day-to-day basis.” #constructionready #iamconstructionready #constructioncareers #skilledtrades #successstories #thursdaythrivers

Our programs prepare men and women for a high-earning career in construction, no matter their age or life circumstances.
About us
At Construction Ready, we believe the skilled trades should be just as celebrated as careers requiring a four-year degree. That’s why we train people for great-paying, entry-level construction jobs — so they can earn a comfortable living, do work they enjoy, and build fulfilling careers without the burden of student loan debt. We’re a 501(c)3 non-profit organization created in 1993 as the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA). In 2022, we became Construction Ready, a name taken from our flagship construction training program. Our organization came together when leading construction industry leaders recognized a need for quality construction skills training in Georgia. Skilled labor was then — and remains now — a primary need in the construction industry.

With our first Camp T&I North in the books, here are more highlights from this “train the trainer” program that we delivered in partnership with the Georgia Department of Education. Scenes here include the DOE’s Roger Ivey addressing the group, a metal framing workshop led by Edwin Parra of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., heavy equipment demonstrations, classroom and hands-on sessions in electrical wiring, a site layout project, and after-hours community time. Thanks to Donny Holmes and Georgia Northwestern Technical College for hosting the event! #constructionready #constructioneducation #constructioncareers #handsonlearning #skilledtrades #ctaec

Yesterday we honored four instructors with monetary rewards from our Impact Awards program, which measures workforce impact created by K12 teachers. Congratulations to Eric Rigney of Calhoun High School, Jerome Black (Cass High School), Randin Burley (Commodore Conyers College and Career Academy) and Dennis Wilson (Pickens High School) for their commitment to developing and preparing students for careers in the skilled trades! We kicked off our first annual Camp T&I North yesterday in Calhoun, where a max-capacity group of teachers have convened to learn new concepts, hear from contractors about best practices, and share ideas with one other. Construction teachers can often feel like they are on an island at their respective schools, so these gatherings provide a helpful opportunity to build community and support. Thanks to all of our supporters and partners in this event, including Strack, Inc.! #constructionready #constructioneducation #constructioncareers #handsonlearning #skilledtrades #ctae Georgia Department of Education

There’s a shortage of skilled labor in the construction industry, but Construction Ready’s Zach Fields knows exactly where to find individuals who can fill those jobs in the coming months and years. “The next generation,” Zach says, “is sitting in K-12 classrooms all over our country.” He adds that “we can help so many of them by introducing them to these skills and giving them a chance to decide for themselves what path to success they wish to take.” Zach helped do just that in the past schoolyear at Roswell High School, and he recently shared about the experience with Atlanta Home Improvement Magazine. See the article below for more on how Construction Ready is helping students “clearly see the career path connections they can build while still in school.” #constructionready #constructionindustry #skilledtrades #careers #constructioncareers #constructioneducation #handsonlearning Georgia Department of Education

THURSDAY THRIVERS: Meet Jaylon Cooper, a 2023 graduate of both Mundy’s Mill High School and our Pre-Apprenticeship program at Perry Career Academy. In looking back on his training, Jaylon just might have offered the most ironclad rationale for enrolling that we’ve heard yet: “There is no downside to attending, because it’s only 20 days. It doesn’t cost you any money. And no matter what happens, you’ll always have those credentials.” We wholeheartedly agree, Jaylon! Check out what’s happening in Clayton County, where our partnership with Clayton County Public Schools and the Development Authority of Clayton County is training students at Perry Career Academy and putting them to work on local construction projects. “It teaches me new things — that there’s various ways to have opportunities with this program,” Perry student Isaac Cain told the Clayton News. “I have learned a lot about safety culture, about the [National Center for Construction Education and Research] Core and about how you use tools in a very safe way. I really love the opportunity where I really get the experience of what it’s like to be a construction worker.” Read the newspaper’s full story below! #constructionready #constructionindustry #skilledtrades #georgiajobs

A new piece from WABE looks back on the recent SkillsUSA National Championships and includes this quote from our own CEO, Scott Shelar: “In Georgia and construction, specifically, we need about 10,000 new workers right now … if every person on the floor right now raised their hand and said I want to go to work in construction, we could find a good job for them.” Read the full story below! #constructionready #constructionindustry #skilledtrades #constructioncareers #rewardingcareers
