Last Thursday, July 11, The Bronx Museum officially broke ground on our transformative $33 million renovation designed by award-winning architectural practice, Marvel 🎉 This project will create the world-class arts facility the people of The Bronx deserve and the Museum needs to further elevate and expand access to its vital free arts programming. Marvel 's design will seamlessly unite the Museum's buildings into one recognizable campus; create a continuous and fully accessible gallery loop; reorient the main entrance to the highly visible corner of 165th St and Grand Concourse; and add a new triple-height lobby space with an adjoining cafe. During construction, the Museum's North Wing remains open at regular hours—Wednesday through Sunday from 11AM to 6PM—with free admission for everyone to all exhibitions, events, and activities! This renovation was made possible thanks to: 💫 Funding and support from public officials and agencies including Bronx Borough President Hon. Vanessa L. Gibson, MPA (She, Her, Hers, Ella), NYC Council Member for District 16 Althea Stevens, Speaker of the New York City Council Adrienne Adams, The Bronx Delegation of the New York City Council, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services, and so many others. 💫 Oversight by the New York City Economic Development Corporation 💫 The team at Marvel 's brilliant design work 💫 On-site construction facilitated by Consigli Construction Co., Inc. 💫 And the dedication of The Bronx Museum staff and Board of Trustees, especially Board Chair Joseph Mizzi, Executive Director Klaudio Rodriguez, Deputy Director Shirley S., and former Executive Director Holly Block.

The Ragon Institute of Mass General Brigham, MIT, and Harvard celebrated the official opening of its new headquarters in Cambridge with two ribbon-cutting ceremonies this past week. The ribbon-cutting event on Monday, June 17, was attended by the institute’s benefactors Phillip T. (Terry) and Susan Ragon as well as special guest Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, alongside the heads of the Ragon Institute’s three members institutions: Alan Garber, Interim President of Harvard, Anne Klibanski, President and CEO of Mass General Brigham, and Sally Kornbluth, President of MIT. “Today’s celebration marks a historic milestone in the history of the Ragon Institute and we are humbled by and grateful for the support and vision of Terry and Susan Ragon,” said Bruce D. Walker, MD, the Institute’s Director. “Most importantly, we are excited by the work that will take place here and the global impact it will have on those who suffer from disease.” The employee ribbon-cutting event — held Friday, June 14 — provided the 500 members of the Ragon community, ranging from faculty to researchers to administrative staff, the invaluable experience of getting a first look at their new home. 2024 WOOD IN ARCHITECTURE AWARDS: Barry Mills Hall and the John and Lile Gibbons Center for Arctic Studies, at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, uses mass timber to help meet the college's commitment to carbon neutrality. THE PROJECT TEAM: Architect: HGA Structural Engineer: HGA General Contractor: Consigli Construction Co., Inc. Owner: Bowdoin College Photos: Michael Moran Located among a stand of mature pine trees, this contemporary two-building development clearly stands out among the more traditional stone buildings on Bowdoin College’s New England campus. Barry Mills Hall houses academic, office, and event space, and the John and Lile Gibbons Center for Arctic Studies contains offices and classrooms, as well as the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum. When initially considering the context of this project, architects at HGA knew that mass timber would be a good fit structurally, and because it would meet Bowdoin’s deep-standing commitment to sustainable building practices and carbon neutrality, but they took nothing for granted in recommending its use.
