The Center for Scholars & Storytellers (CSS) at UCLA is thrilled to launch our Cultural Competency Report! This study dives deep into how current film school curricula and educators promote inclusive and nuanced storytelling. Through in-depth interviews with 10 storytellers, 9 scholars, and 9 students, we’ve gathered invaluable insights and recommendations for improvement. Co-designing resources with teachers and families, The Next Generation Preschool Science team led by Digital Promise, edc.org, and GBH promotes science in preschool by co-designing innovative STEM resources for home and school. "The project is built around children’s natural curiosity to understand the world around them…. We asked, ‘How does children’s natural curiosity about the world drive them to ask questions and understand?’ The question was not only how we could support children’s learning and curiosity in preschool classrooms but how we could support learning in communities and families as well." - Danae Kamdar "When our team is in the co-design phase with preschool teachers and families, we get together to brainstorm seed ideas—initial concepts of what we think would work in the preschool space or be interesting for the children….From there, the teachers share their feedback about what is engaging for the kids. Our fifth edition of the Equitable Futures Innovation Network blog series brings into the spotlight the Young Aspiring Americans for Social and Political Activism (YAASPA). YAASPA was born out of a desire for change, fueled by frustration at conversations where race was ignored or bypassed within youth-centered civic engagement programs. YAASPA is based upon a desire to have truth-telling, race-related conversations in ways that were productive and illuminated possibility. Dr. Janiece Z. Mackey, PhD — current YAASPA CEO and an EFIN Fellow — and her husband Ernest Mackey co-founded YAASPA in 2010. Since then, YAASPA has grown into a community space that honors youth wisdom, builds academic and career self-efficacy, self-awareness of racial identity development, civic literacy and civic engagement through courses on civic engagement, paid internships and fellowships, summer programming, and workforce development. Call For Papers: American Educational Research Association seeks proposals on the theme of: "Research, Remedy, and Repair: Toward Just Education Renewal”. ”We call for proposals for Presidential Sessions that are multidisciplinary, cross-cutting panels that consider questions and issues such as: 1. The role of public, private, and alternative education—early childhood, K–12, and higher education—in a democratic, multiracial, and yet unequal society. 2. The role of educational evaluation and assessment in developing policies, practices, and pedagogies that repair harm and renew the promise of education to meet the needs of all students. 3. The design and delivery of holistic education that accounts for and addresses ongoing loss and trauma, community need, and disability, including policies, pedagogies, and practices that support and sustain high-quality and equitable education and healthy communities. 4. The changing nature of the teaching profession, graduate studies in education, and the education doctorate, and how our field might respond to these alterations in ways that expand opportunity and strengthen research capacity. 5. What new civil rights data, educational measures, and methods are needed to answer pressing questions, and what existing federal and state data sources require expansion or revision. 6. How partnerships with youth activists, community organizations, lawyers, policy makers, philanthropies, media, and civil rights organizations can work to advance the production and utilization of research. 7. How research can identify historical harms and intergenerational injustice and imagine remedies that include professional and community-held forms of knowledge and practices. 8.
