Developing the Next Generation of Latino Leaders®

About us

In 1978, a small group of Hispanic members of Congress established the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) to develop the next generation of Latino leaders with a clear vision of a strong America made possible with the many contributions of educated and civic-minded Latino leaders engaged in and contributing to all aspects of U.S. society. This vision was founded on three cornerstones for success: education attainment and college access, leadership development programs in D.C., and access to a powerful network of Latino leaders in the United States. Today CHCI is the premier Hispanic nonprofit and nonpartisan 501(c)(3) leadership development organization in the country firmly rooted in the same three mission cornerstones laid by our founders: Educate. Empower. Connect. By promoting education attainment and college access, providing unmatched career development experience, and offering award-winning leadership programs that connect program participants to the most powerful network of U.S. leaders, CHCI’s mission is unwavering and more powerful and critical than ever before in our nation’s history. The success of our more than 11,800 young Latinos served across the country, will determine the nation’s success in this century. With its comprehensive approach to leadership development, CHCI directly impacts the lives of over 1,700 students and young professionals each year through its fellowships, congressional internships, scholarships, Ready to Lead (R2L®) college readiness program, and R2L NextGen program, a dramatic increase from the 46 students served in 1999.

Today, they had the opportunity to meet with Representative Cárdenas at the Molina Family Latino Gallery exhibit, which he was instrumental in creating. This exhibit at the National Museum of American History is the Smithsonian's first gallery dedicated to the Latino experience and contributions to the United States.

  • Yesterday, we celebrated our 30 incredible CHCI Summer Congressional Interns! This cohort is made up of talented, diverse and committed leaders who represent 20 different states and Puerto Rico and 11 Hispanic heritages— and half of them are the first in their family to go to college. While many of our program participants have political science backgrounds, within this class we also had interns with backgrounds in biochemistry, engineering, public health, journalism, nursing, and education. To our interns, we wish you all the best in your future endeavors and look forward to the lasting impact you will undoubtedly continue to make.💙 Thank you CHCI Chair Congressman Espaillat and Congresswoman Salinas and for joining us to deliver special remarks. And special shoutout to Amaris Benavidez, CHCl Alumni Association, Washington, D.C-Metro Chapter President, and Class speaker Luka André Heidari.

  • CHCI commends the new Executive Order (EO) announced today by the Biden-Harris administration, establishing the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). This Executive Order marks a significant milestone for the Latino community, which has advocated for action in higher education for more than twenty years. HSIs now exceed 500 campuses across the U.S., providing higher education to more than 65 percent of Latino students and 30 percent of all Pell grant recipients – impacting more than 4.7 million students overall! This Executive Order represents a critical step forward in enhancing the federal government’s capacity to proactively address longstanding equity challenges faced by HSIs, Latino students, and educators. President Biden also proposed a rule to expand the federal TRIO program that would grant program access to Dreamers and other vulnerable communities. The expansion would create educational pathways for an estimated 50,000 more students each year and make college a possibility for thousands of students that cannot currently enroll. As the premier organization dedicated to developing the next generation of Latino leaders, we are thrilled to learn about these new efforts, which will undoubtedly improve the lives of many of our current and future program participants, and positively impact their families and communities.

  • 📸 Our 2024 Summer Congressional Interns were joined by four senior team members from CHCI (Berenice B., Yvette Maldonado, Caroline Gonzalez Scott, and Marie Chough) for a panel discussion. They shared insights into their personal career journeys, roles within CHCI, and offered tips on leveraging their time on the Hill to enhance future job opportunities! They also discussed working with a primarily Latino population, leadership in team settings, and meaningful mentorship experiences that have shaped their lives. Here at CHCI, we're proud to be shaping the next generation of Latino leaders 💙! #HereToLead
