With the clarity coming from the World Resources Institute on the wood industry's egregious under-reporting of their carbon footprint, it's no surprise that the frequency of pro #CLT and #masstimber articles is increasing. One of the hallmarks of the game of basketball is to bring on a full court press to desperately hold on to win a tight game, and that's exactly where the wood industry finds itself, so let's review some facts: - The #carbonfootprint globally of the #wood industry is estimated to be 10%, which is 2% higher than that of the global #concrete industry - The wood industry won't discuss their #productioncarbon, you'll only hear them report on their embodied carbon AFTER their production phase - The theories on CLT/Mass Timber not burning, but instead "charring", are a stretch at best that has been contrived in a testing lab under controlled conditions - Once a tree is harvested, it immediately begins breaking down/releasing carbon and will do so throughout it's full #lifecycle - These manufacturers do not address their impact on #deforestation or #erosioncontrol now that they are harvesting new growth forests There are so many questions to be answered on this topic, and yet so many of my colleagues in the building design and construction industry are still accepting the carte blanche assertion that wood is the answer to reducing #globalwarming and #greenhousegasemissions. Wood can be a solution, but ONLY if trees are allowed to remain in the forests to filter out atmospheric carbon. #BuildWithStrength #GreyIsTheNewGreen
