🌿 Exploring conservation and education at the Sophia Point Rainforest Research Centre: Last week, Concordia Amazonas attendees had the incredible opportunity to visit Sophia Point Rainforest Research Centre, nestled in the heart of Guyana's rich biodiversity. From towering Mora trees to the elusive Jaguarundi, the center is a hub for preserving Guyana's natural heritage. After an immersive excursion through the jungle, we were honored to engage in discussions with local leaders, scientists, and experts on biodiversity conservation.  This visit marks a pivotal moment in the Concordia Amazonas Initiative, with Concordia being the first-ever international organization to visit the Centre and reinforcing our commitment to environmental governance and sustainable development. Additionally, Nicola Green, Co-Founder & Chair of Trustees at Sophia, signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Conservation International Guyana. The process featured Curtis Bernard, Vice President at Conservation International Guyana, and Iván Duque Márquez, Former President of the Republic of Colombia and Chair of the Concordia Amazonas Initiative (pictured). Read our latest Q&A with Nicola Green, Co-Founder & Chair of Trustees at Sophia Point, Ailsa Henderson, Centre Director at Sophia Point, Dr Gyanpriya Maharaj, Director of Centre for Studies of Biological Diversity at the University of Guyana and Trustee of Sophia Point, and Concordia’s Matthew Swift to find out more about the partnership with Sophia Point Rainforest Research Centre. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eZS3R3xU #ConcordiaSummit #SophiaPoint #Conservation #SustainableDevelopment #Education #Biodiversity

I want to thank President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who graciously hosted us in his diverse and exquisite country, Guyana.  In a landmark announcement during the 2024 Concordia Amazonas Summit last week, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali revealed plans to double Guyana’s protected areas, currently covering around 8.4% of the country’s landmass, within 18 months. He reinforced the significance of having conversations on protecting biodiversity globally, highlighting Guyana’s success in creating a national biodiversity strategy and its global scalability.  Guyana has a Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) to prioritize the country’s low deforestation rates, drive innovative climate finance mechanisms, and create a new global Oscar for climate and environment to elevate worldwide awareness and focus on sustainable development.  We extend our heartfelt gratitude to President Dr. Mohammed Irfaan Ali for his visionary leadership and for announcing this transformative project. This initiative is set to have a profound social impact in Guyana for decades to come. We also appreciate his trust in Concordia as a platform for this significant dialogue, demonstrating how collaboration and conversation can inspire collective action. We are grateful to experience this moment through Amazonas Summit created by H.E. Iván Duque Márquez, Former President of the Republic of Colombia and Chair of the Concordia Amazonas Initiative.  To delve deeper into this groundbreaking announcement, we invite you to read the full press release on the Concordia website. Please see below my thoughts about what occurred this past weekend, reported in USA Today and the Palm Beach Daily News: “The attempted assassination of President Trump was a terrifying episode for our country and the world. It could have been much worse, and I am so relieved and happy that the president is safe. We also need to remember that someone was killed..and others seriously injured in what should have been a celebration of our democratic process. I truly hope this moment will bring about a reevaluation of the current tone of our politics and get us to shift to a much more positive and forward-thinking place as a nation. I have spent my entire career traveling the world, and we all need to recognize just how lucky we all are to be Americans and hold ourselves to a higher standard.” Read more in USA TODAY here: https://lnkd.in/e_7y93Ff https://lnkd.in/ez79dS8k And the Palm Beach Daily News here: https://lnkd.in/e-B98cpW

Sharing highlights from this week’s visit to ExxonMobil's offshore facilities while in Guyana for the 2024 Concordia Amazonas Summit. The visit, which included Concordia’s Matthew Swift, Former President of Colombia Iván Duque Márquez (Concordia Leadership Council Member & Chair of the 2024 Amazonas Summit), and Karthik Ramanna (Professor of Business and Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford), with Craig Kelly (Director, International Government Relations at Exxon Mobil Corporation) and Kevin Murphy (Public & Government Affairs at ExxonMobil), exemplifies Concordia's commitment to fostering positive impact in regions critical to global environmental health. Key highlights included: ✈️ A fly-over of the Floating Production Storage & Offloading (FPSO) facility to witness the advanced technology and operational excellence firsthand. 🚢An insightful drillship tour that showcased the intricacies of offshore drilling operations and their contributions to sustainable energy solutions. In the evening, we had the pleasure of attending a private dinner hosted by ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge, providing an excellent opportunity for networking and discussing the future of sustainable energy solutions. In line with Concordia’s mission, the Amazonas Initiative establishes nature-driven market-led solutions to protect and celebrate the natural diversity and importance of the Amazon rainforest. The visit specifically highlighted the importance of forging public-private partnerships that focus on driving sustainable development and economic growth for a better future.  Together, we can make a difference in preserving the Amazon and promoting sustainable practices. #Concordia #AmazonasInitiative
