Building vibrant and engaged communities

About us

We envision Seattle as a place where everyone – from teachers and artists to seniors on fixed incomes to young families – can set down roots and thrive. Our history is rooted in community. What started in Capitol Hill in the 1970s was the idea that everyone should live affordably in their neighborhood, in their community. Today, we own and maintain nearly 50 apartment buildings across the Seattle area, providing safe and affordable apartments to over 2,000 residents. We strive to develop amenities that not only meet the housing needs of our residents but also serve the community around them.

Did you know that Community Roots owns, operates, and maintains Broadway Crossing on the corner of Broadway and E Pine St. on Capitol Hill? If you're familiar with the area, you might know the ground floor tenant: Walgreens. Built in 2007, Broadway Crossing was one of the first LEED Silver affordable housing developments in the city. The building features 44 total apartments serving individuals and households earning between 30% and 60% of the area median income. Residents have access to a shared rooftop deck, play area, dishwashers, garbage disposals, and free high-speed internet. Broadway Crossing is just one of 40 Community Roots properties that provide quality, safe, affordable homes to 2,000 of our neighbors.

Meet Laney, a resident of Pride Place, a Community Roots Housing building focused on serving adults ages 55 and up. Pride Place is more than a building, it is a home in the heart of Capitol Hill where LGBTQIA seniors can live authentically and with pride. Laney first got to know Pride Place by volunteering to help people apply for housing in the new, eight-story building. "One day it occurred to me that I could apply for Pride Place." Laney did, and she's been calling the building home since last October. "When I moved up here again, not only did I move back up to Capitol Hill, but I moved into Pride Place. I felt like this could be a community...Affordable housing is everything…the idea of aging in place is so important— and not getting priced out of an apartment. That's not going to happen to us. We're going to get to stay here, and that just makes me feel so secure." Hear more about Laney’s journey to Pride Place in this short video.

On Saturday, we celebrated the grand opening of Africatown Plaza, a powerful new addition to Seattle's Central District. In partnership with Africatown Community Land Trust, this seven-story, 126-unit affordable apartment building is a demonstration of years of community-driven planning and collaboration. Africatown Plaza, with its distinct designs by David Baker Architects, GGLO Design, and Laurie Wilson, breaks away from the typical Seattle multifamily development. Every wave and curve of its facade illustrates a story of resilience, cultural preservation, and where the community is headed. Featuring family-sized apartments and local art by Moses Sun and Jasmine Brown, this project is about more than housing—it's about rooting community. We're honored to be part of this effort to build a future where affordability, culture, and history stand together. Learn more about the development at www.africatownplaza.org.
