About us
CHOM provides advocacy, supportive housing, community inclusion, and stability for homeless and special needs populations across the state. Community Housing of Maine (CHOM) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that as its core mission provides advocacy, supportive housing, community inclusion, and stability for homeless and special needs populations across the state. CHOM also provides workforce housing for people who can't afford to live near their work. As a developer, CHOM collaborates to produce and maintain community-based supportive housing that fosters pride, stability, and wellness. CHOM partners with over 50 service provider agencies to make sure the people housed receive consistent, supportive services to engineer success in housing. CHOM teams with property maintenance companies to ensure that all homes are maintained to rigorous quality standards. With an experienced, highly professional staff, CHOM is able to develop complex projects from large tax credit multi-unit developments, to smaller, customized homes that meet the needs of populations served. Most of CHOM’s properties are in community settings close to services, local support, and public transportation. CHOM works closely with municipal officials, planners, architects, service providers, family members, and community members to thoughtfully design or improve buildings that function efficiently and blend seamlessly into neighborhoods. With the confidence and support of funding institutions including Maine State Housing Authority, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, the Genesis Community Loan Fund, HUD, Rural Development, cities such as Portland and Bangor, banks and private lending institutions, CHOM consistently delivers excellence in new and carefully renovated housing that communicates dignity and respect to individuals served.

CHOM would like to express our great appreciation to everyone who helped us celebrate the grand opening of The Schoolhouse, our project partners, and the residents who have made it their home. The Schoolhouse is located on Harlow Street in Bangor and offers 66 units of affordable housing for families. The renovation and rehabilitation of this historic building, which was originally constructed in 1912 to serve as the city’s public high school, began in 2021 and was completed in 2023. The project involved the rehabilitation and reconfiguration existing units and the addition of new units, along with the creation of inviting community space for tenants. The rehabilitation greatly improved the building’s energy efficiency and accessibility while preserving its unique historic character. The project added many amenities for tenants including 2 laundry rooms, community rooms, a children’s play space, a new elevator, tenant storage, a telemedicine room and more. A special thanks to Dan Brennan, Director of MaineHousing, for being our keynote speaker, Christopher Closs, Historic Preservation Consultant for illustrating the immense history and importance of the building, Cullen Ryan, Executive Director, and Robyn Wardell, Development Officer at CHOM, who also provided remarks, Preservation Management, Inc. for coordinating this event, and the residents who opened their homes for guest tours.
