About us

Founded in 1978, Committee for Children is a global nonprofit dedicated to fostering the safety and well-being of children through social-emotional learning and development. CFC is the world’s largest provider of research-based educational programs that promote social-emotional skills and prevent bullying and sexual abuse. Committee for Children has been working for over three decades to help create a world in which the whole child is not only nurtured, but celebrated. Committee for Children creates research-based, social-emotional learning materials to help children succeed in school and in life, helping create a world in which children can grow up to be peaceful, kind, responsible citizens. The organization’s social-emotional learning materials have taught millions of children skills that help them stay safe, manage their emotions, solve problems, avoid risky behavior, and improve their academics. Today the organization’s curricula reach schools in over 70 countries, including 30 percent of all U.S. elementary schools. Each year, more than 26.9 million children benefit from these programs.     This National Parents’ Day, we’re sharing how you can support your child’s social and emotional growth. SEL assessments measure students’ social and emotional competence, including essential life skills that help them manage emotions, build healthy relationships, and make good decisions. These skills are critical for academic engagement and performance, supporting students’ academic growth (Source: bit.ly/3zeL1N8). SEL programs are designed to improve students’ social-emotional competency, but SEL doesn’t stop in the classroom! Parents can use this information to support their child’s growth at home, fostering consistency between school and home. Here’s how you can nurture your child’s social-emotional skills at home: 👂 Listen Generously: Practice active listening and encourage open expression of feelings. 👩🏫 Model Desired Behavior: Show emotionally intelligent behavior and kindness. 🌟 Foster Self-Esteem: Give age-appropriate responsibilities and appreciate their efforts. 🎨 Respect Differences: Honor your child’s unique talents and avoid comparisons.     The majority of parents are united in their desire for schools to teach social-emotional learning: 🌟 Most parents whose children are already taught SEL want it to continue, with more than 1 in 4 wanting even more. 🌟 Most parents whose kids aren’t taught SEL strongly support its introduction in schools. 🌟 Just over half of parents say their child’s school incorporates SEL, and across party lines, 8 in 10 want to maintain or increase SEL content.     According to CASEL, academic learning accelerates when students have supportive relationships and opportunities to develop social-emotional and cognitive skills across various contexts. Key Findings: 📈 Hundreds of studies involving over 1 million students worldwide show that SEL positively impacts academic achievement (Source: bit.ly/3xpvfy6). 📈 Students participating in SEL have improved school functioning, as seen by their grades, test scores, attendance, and homework completion (Source: bit.ly/45nPN6N). 📈 The positive academic impact lasts long-term: Years later, students who participated in SEL programs performed an average of 13 percentile points higher than those who didn’t (Source: bit.ly/3z96J4M).
