Columbus Day is a reminder of the importance of diversity, inclusion, exploration and innovation. The groundwork laid by those who came before us sets the tone for the future. Today, we reflect on the varying perspectives that work to elevate the success of our command. Since our Nation’s founding, through peace, war, and every challenge in between, the U.S. Navy has stood the watch to protect America’s economic vitality, sustain our Nation’s influence, support our Allies and partners, deter conflict, and when called upon, defended our freedom through combat. Today, as we celebrate 249 years of the Navy, we remember those who came before us and strive to ensure our Sailors and Marines have the tools they need to succeed today, tomorrow and into the future. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). During this month, we celebrate the value and talent workers with disabilities add to America’s workplaces and economy. This year’s theme is “Access to Good Jobs for All.” NDEAM takes place annually, but its purpose is to confirm our commitment to ensuring disabled workers have access to good jobs, every month of every year. Good jobs change lives, and all workers—including disabled workers—deserve the opportunity to prepare for, obtain and succeed in them. This month is a reminder to advocate for accessibility and inclusivity, as they are essential to the strength and health of any workforce. From September 15 to October 15 of each year, we observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. This month is an opportunity to pay tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

September 11, 2001 is a day that will live forever in our minds and hearts. Twenty-three years ago, one of the most devastating tragedies in our nation’s history occurred. This day is now known as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance, a time to honor those we lost. Today and every day, we remember.

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. This observance was established to raise awareness around the world that suicide can be prevented. The theme for this year is “Changing the Narrative.” This emphasizes the need to shift from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness and support. By initiating these conversations, we can break down barriers, raise awareness and create a culture of understanding. By providing resources and support to those who need it, we can prevent suicide.
