Recently, NiSource was recognized as the "Out of the Box" awardee by the University of Illinois Chicago for exceeding its target in monarch conservation by 33%. The award further recognizes NiSource's efforts to align the CCAA with the company’s Biodiversity Commitment. In the 2023 program year, NiSource implemented 8,013 adopted acres, conducting monitoring at 70 plots with an average of 98 milkweed stems and 38% nectar plant cover per habitat acre. NiSource also developed 20 biodiversity management plans for Key Biodiversity Areas noting strong alignment with the CCAA's conservation measures. This recognition is a testament to NiSource's successful year of Monarch CCAA and biodiversity implementation and its ongoing commitment to transforming rights-of-way into pollinator habitats. • Great news for our crews and contractors! Drive safely, Kentucky.

President and Chief Operating Officer at Columbia Gas of Kentucky

As you drive in to work today, you will likely pass through multiple work zones and not know the people in safety vests you see working there. It’s different for me. Sometimes, those men and women are Columbia Gas of Kentucky team members and contractors working to maintain our pipelines. They are hardworking people with families who expect them to come home safely at the end of the day. I am celebrating the passage yesterday of a new Kentucky law that directly impacts their safety by expanding the definition work zones to include utility workers and the worksites they set up in neighborhoods across Central and Eastern Kentucky. I applaud Governor Andy Beshear, Representatives Blanton and Hale, Senator Higdon and the entire Kentucky State Legislature for passing this critical law, a major victory as #WorkZoneSafetyAwarenessWeek comes to a close this week. As the Governor noted earlier this month, 2023 recorded over 1,200 highway work zone crashes, resulting in 247 injuries and 17 fatalities. This new law will update Kentucky Revised Statute 189.960 to enforce strict standards for drivers who drive recklessly in work zones. Violators can expect to see fines as high as $10,000 and may be subject to revocation of their driver's license.    At NiSource and Columbia Gas, we believe safety is a foundational commitment of our business. We strive to operate with excellence and do the right things to keep our employees and customers safe above all else. With this new law, our Columbia Gas crews will be able to perform the vital services to customers across our 29-county service are and return home safely to their families at the end of each day.     Slow down, Kentucky. The lives of my co-workers and friends depend on it.

If you’ve never had to wonder if you might lose your life or livelihood by simply doing your job, consider yourself lucky. For many of our dedicated employees and contractors who work alongside roadways and highways each day, making it home safely is not guaranteed. Our employees risk their lives in work zones across our service area to provide safe, reliable natural gas service to our customers. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear reported last week that in 2023, Kentucky recorded 1,251 highway work zone crashes that resulted in 247 injuries and 17 fatalities, nearly triple the number of fatalities in the previous year. Columbia Gas joined representatives from other utility companies last week as Mayor Linda Gorton proclaimed this week as Work Zone Week in Lexington. In observation, I challenge you, on behalf of our team and their families, to drive safely in work zones this week and every day. Slow down. Expect the unexpected on our route to work and school. Be patient. Maintain a safe driving distance from the vehicles ahead of you. Obey the work zone signage, even if you don’t see workers present. Watch out for flaggers. Put your phone on silent until you get to your destination. Even one crash, one injury or one death is too many. Click here for more work zone safety tips: https://lnkd.in/erhkVCDG

Columbia Gas President & COO Kimra Cole was joined by Lexington Councilmember Hannah LeGris and Mayor Linda Gorton, who presented a proclamation honoring employees for #NaturalGasWorkersDay at the site of one of our pipeline replacement projects today. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear also signed a proclamation and the state legislature adopted resolutions in observation of the hard work of natural gas employees to provide safe and reliable service across the state. "Today and every day, we are grateful for the work our team does every day to ensure safe and reliable natural gas service to our valued customers and communities," said Cole.
