About us

The Codman Shoulder Society (CSS) is a group consisting of Dr. Warner and Dr. Higgins' former fellows that meets annually at the conclusion of the San Diego Shoulder Institute held in June. Our alumni group was given this name in honor of the father of the "End-Result" concept, Dr. Ernest Amory Codman. The CSS and its annual meeting are used to foster development of former fellows' careers and simultaneously provide evidence-based work to support shoulder care.

  • Dear Colleagues: It is my great pleasure to invite you to the AO North America/Boston Shoulder Institute Inaugural Shoulder Tendon Transfer, and Evaluation and Management of Scapulothoracic Disorders Course (https://lnkd.in/dYK4RRP9).   This course will address many problems that most other shoulder courses only touch on briefly. This includes management of irreparable rotator cuff tendon tears and paralysis of and dysfunction of scapular muscles. Dr. Elhassan and the international faculty of this course have been leaders in developing such surgical techniques that have changed so many people’s lives. This program is an opportunity to share these ideas with you so that you can also dramatically improve your patients’ lives.   We welcome you to join us this November.   Kind Regards,   Jon J.P. Warner MD Founder, Boston Shoulder Institute and The Codman Shoulder Society

Dear Colleagues I am pleased to bring you the 9th Annual Codman Shoulder Society Meeting https://lnkd.in/eUdPWM3N. This year, we have focused on a critical and timely topic: Value in Orthopedic Surgery. The perception of value most certainly differs between surgeons, their hospitals, and the industry whose products they use and with whom they may collaborate. It is this complex interrelationship that we will consider in depth.   This year, we have collaborated with two important partners: Avant-Garde Health and The Journal for Orthopedic Experience and Innovation (JOEI). This way, we will have a perspective that is not only based on a practical analytic perspective but also an academic perspective. I am grateful to Derek Haas, MBA Founder and CEO of Avant-Garde Health, and Ira Kirschenbaum, MD, Founder and CEO of JOEI, for this partnership.   Part I of our program is entitled "Hospital Physician Collaboration and Financial Alignment for Cost Management." This year's highlight is our Keynote Speaker, Susanna Gallani, PhD, and Tai Family Associate Professor of Business Administration in the Accounting and Management unit at Harvard Business School. Her interests include Value-Based Healthcare, healthcare culture, and compensation plans. Other topics in this section will include examples and case studies of the successful hospital-physician relationships of co-management and gainsharing.   Part II of our program is entitled "Value in Orthopedics/Shoulder Care: Where is it?" In this session, experts will present the concepts of the value of sustainability in shoulder surgery, the cost of implants for joint arthroplasty, and the potential for digital technology to deliver added value to our patients and our hospital partners.   I am very grateful to our excellent group of dynamic speakers and leaders who agreed to give their time and generously share insights with us. I also want to thank Dr. James Esch & Leslie Lebitski of the San Diego Shoulder Institute for supporting our past annual meetings. Other than during the Pandemic, this is the only time we have presented our meeting as a 2-hour webinar with open discussion. This proved very successful, with several hundred individuals indicating interest in attending, including physicians, industry representatives, and other interested individuals. We have posted our video links to both VuMedi and YouTube. For those in the medical profession or industry, VuMedi is a closed platform/network free to those wishing to sign up. This allows you to watch videos and post your comments and questions. For others, YouTube is an accessible viewing alternative.   I hope you find this presentation helpful and inspiring. Please feel free to share your thoughts via VuMedi chat or our LinkedIn page and WhatsApp group. Best Regards,   Jon "J.P." Warner MD Founder, CSS

Dear Colleagues: I am pleased to share with you a recent presentation given at the Annual San Diego Shoulder Institute. This outlines the evolving role of Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality, Virtual Planning, Immersive Virtual Reality education, Navigation, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Orthopedic surgery, and in particular shoulder arthroplasty. To be sure, the area of shoulder arthroplasty is well behind other specialties in orthopedics. Moreover, I am sharing the perspective of industry as well as surgeons in the United States and Europe in terms of their current view of this technology and vision for opportunities to create value for patients, surgeons, industry and hospitals. I hope you find this of interest, but bear in mind that this area is rapidly evolving and in the case of AI/ML the speed of development is at least 2x Moore’s law. Dear Colleagues: It is my pleasure to bring to your attention an opportunity to help your non-operative and operative patients in recovery. myHealthTrack (https://myhealthtrack.com/) offers an App-based recovery tool that can be customized according to your preferences in order to improve your patient’s recovery after injury and surgery. Enclosed is a slide deck that clearly describes this service. In addition, here is a brief video describing this service. Moreover, this service creates value for you and your colleagues in terms of potential revenue which is now reimbursed by insurance with a specific code. For those who are interested, we may also be able to create a Codman Shoulder Society research group to report on the value proposition from the standpoint of patient care innovation and cost management. For more information, please email me and I will put you in touch with the company. Alternatively, simply go to the website and follow instructions to open your account. • Dear Colleagues:   Enclosed is an image I saw on a LinkedIn post. For those of you who may not have seen this, this may be worth a laugh.   How many of you work in a group or attend meetings where certain personality types might fit into this matrix? All kidding aside, it is helpful to know with whom you are dealing as this can inform your strategy on how to manage certain types of people.   Best Regards,   JP Warner MD Founder, CSS

Dear Colleagues:   I would imagine most of you have heard of Harvard Business School Prof. Michael E. Porter in the context of his Life’s work creating the concept of “Value-Based Healthcare”, as well as his work on competition and strategy. This past week I was privileged to spend a day at HBS celebrating the life and career of Michael Porter with many others who knew him. He retired last year.   Prof. Porter joined the faculty of Harvard Business School on July 1, 1973. In the draft of what will become a case study on his life and contributions, the following is written: “During the following half-century, he reshaped the field of business strategy and influenced scholarship and practice in business, economic development, healthcare and philanthropy.”   In the winter of 2012, I was fortunate to participate in his annual Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC) Program (where I also met Robert Kaplan and Mary Witkowski), and subsequently I was lucky to have him advise me on my career and even mentor me as I pivoted to a commitment to VBHC. His accomplishments and contributions over the course of his life and career truly earn him status as an ICON (“Defined as a person widely admired especially for having a great influence or significance in a particular sphere.”)   It's my pleasure to share some impressions of my day at HBS honoring Michael E. Porter. Continue reading on the Codman Shoulder Society website: https://lnkd.in/ekqGJAgy

Dear Colleagues: By now, most of you are familiar with preoperative Virtual Reality (VR) Planning. Blueprint is one of many Virtual Reality Planning tools and some companies use VR planning for Navigation during surgery. Blueprint now facilitates navigation through Mixed Reality (MR) as well; however, an added value for surgeons is the potential for Blueprint VR planning to facilitate MR guided referencing for key portions of the surgical procedure. The following links will bring you to a video which demonstrates this useful approach: VR planning and MR guidance on Vumedi (https://lnkd.in/egrXshgQ) VR planning and MR guidance on YouTube (https://lnkd.in/e2-5AynZ) Kind Regards, Jon “JP” Warner MD Founder, CSS
