Sometime in May this year, I was connected to Patch through the help of Teen-Turn and this kickstarted the most incredible experience of a 10-day fellowship in the heart of San Francisco, California. I want to thank Tom McCarthy and Anita Blanchfield for organising a fantastic cohort and a lifechanging experience for us. I feel so privileged to have been selected to be a part of the first cohort of the Patch Fellowship along with 9 other ambitious Irish youth. San Francisco has shaped my way of thinking about business, raising capital and inspiring change! ✨ Some personal highlights and takeaways: - Meeting John Collison and Patrick Collison, the founders of Stripe. I think this one needs no further explanation. - Just being in Silicon Valley and meeting the people behind companies such as OpenAI and Stripe. - My first hackathon 🚀 Fatma Dogan and I devised a ‘Blood Dehydration Detector Kit’ and within the span of 7 hours, we managed to build a front-end page using an AI model and prompt engineering which allowed us to calculate vector angles from a drop of blood suspended in oil and determine hydration levels from that. I look forward to doing even more hackathons in the future - I’m hooked now! - Visiting Baobab Studios (A leading VR animation studio that has been awarded with 9 Emmy’s so far!) and learning about the world of animation and VR games. As a girl who grew up being a bookworm, I was instantly envious that I did not spend more time playing games such as the ones produced here. - Visiting Code Tenderloin and going on a walking tour of the Tenderloin area with Shavonne Wong. Meeting Del Seymour (who I am told is easily the most photographed man in all of California!) and the rest of the team has inspired me to continue engaging with my community and has changed the framework that I typically applied to my nonprofit work in Dublin. This was a huge teaching moment for me and an experience that I do not take lightly. - The people of San Francisco and their kind nature - I have never been surrounded by some many driven and ambitious people who are so willing to share the knowledge and resources that they have. Special shoutout to the folks I met at the pebblebed dinner and Cleantech Open Mixer - I hope to keep in touch! To everyone who supported this trip, your contributions made this experience possible and one that we won't ever forget. To everyone who took the time out of their day to speak to the odd group of Irish people strolling through SF 😂 thank you for all the chats whether that was out on the streets or around the dinner table. To my cohort, I hope we keep in touch - you're all seriously cool people and cannot wait to see how we apply all that we've learnt in SF!

Last week, Taskrabbit for Good (TR4G) reunited with San Francisco-based partner organization Code Tenderloin as part of TR4G’s workforce development program. We held four job skills workshops over two days, covering customer service, moving assistance, furniture assembly, and mounting. Tasker Joe did an incredible job leading the trainings both days for a full house – 25 people each day! Thank you to Joe and Code Tenderloin for the opportunity!

“People think of the Tenderloin as a place where only the homeless, drug addicted, and drug dealers live. We wanted to show this was a place of dignity for its Black residents,” said Del Seymour, the show’s organizer, aka “Mayor of the Tenderloin,” and founder of Code Tenderloin, which teaches job skills to homeless, drug-addicted and low-income residents of the area.  https://lnkd.in/g58ZhmtB Reporting by Francine Brevetti for Bay City News

In line with our purpose of advancing health outcomes and health equity, we continue to evolve our fellows’ experience to give them a greater awareness of issues of access and inequity in healthcare. That’s why this year, in addition to shadowing care providers in clinical environments, our fellows’ needs finding experience includes a community immersion component: they will spend time at different community organizations learning how the social determinants of health affect wellness and healthcare, and interacting with populations who may be encountering barriers to seeking services in formal clinical settings. Their first community-based engagement was San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood with Code Tenderloin. This volunteer-run organization provides empowerment, dignity, and opportunity to Tenderloin residents in need by removing barriers that keep marginalized and underrepresented people from securing long-term employment and providing support for the community in the form of health checks, meals, and housing. Code Tenderloin’s founder, Del Seymour, encourages various groups to come and spend time with them to deepen empathy and understanding, and provide insight into the issues that they face that can translate into actionable solutions that can uplift all. The Code Tenderloin group showed us the wonderful work being done in the community, including the Tenderloin museum celebrating local heroes, initiatives to care for children and youth, and the focus on providing safe, green spaces for the community to enjoy. Additionally, the group also discussed the significant issues faced by the Tenderloin, including the housing crisis, substance use, and lack of access to healthcare faced by many. By sharing more about these challenges, Code Tenderloin allowed fellows to see how the social determinants of health and issues of inequity affect health and influence health outcomes for different groups.  The rising sophomores currently enrolled in our Sophomore College course, Needs Finding in Healthcare, could also join this visit to find needs that may not be immediately apparent in a clinical setting. By creating opportunities for our trainees to engage, learn from, and build connections with  different communities, we hope that the innovations they conceive will reflect and serve the needs of a more diverse population. We are very thankful to Code Tenderloin for the warm welcome and for showing us around their neighborhood. You can learn more about their mission here: https://lnkd.in/gYgjqyP9
