Check out this amazing photo by Michael Sswat, which was the runner-up for the Popular Choice Prize in our recent Visions for Greenhouse Gas Removal Image Competition. The shortlisted images were displayed at our "Goodbye Greenhouse Gas" event and attendees had the chance to view them in person. Read all about it here: https://lnkd.in/eYFsKhty
It’s Photo Friday, which we want to celebrate with an award-winning underwater image, taken by our colleague Michael Sswat (GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel) during a field test for artificial upwelling south of the Canaries. In the photo, a diver monitors the tested wave pump. Wave pumps well up nutrient-rich cold deepwater into the nutrient-poor surface layer. The deepwater may thus have a cooling effect and the nutrients may stimulate algae growth. The algae store carbon in their biomass, which is then integrated into the food web and eventually sinks down to be sequestered in the depths of the ocean. The water from the pump was colored with a neon-green non-toxic dye to follow the mixing of the water masses and thus determine the efficiency of the wave pump. Unfortunately, the field test failed due to technical challenges. However, this image won the Runner-up of the Popular Choice Prize in an image competition run by CO₂RE - The Greenhouse Gas Removal Hub this year. For all our German-speaking followers: If you want to know more about the upwelling field test, read our related Science Stories: https://lnkd.in/d--tHtxR #mCDR #CDR #Carbonremoval #CO2removal #TestArtUp CDRmare is a research mission of the Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung (DAM) funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung and the northern German federal states.

We know that we need to dramatically scale up carbon dioxide removal (CDR) if we are to limit global temperature rises in line with the Paris Agreement. One essential component of this is a 'social license to operate' – how acceptable and legitimate local communities and stakeholders hold the operations of a company, organisation or project to be. Many CDR methods that scientists are working on are novel, currently small-scale, and may not be ready to deploy for some time. So how might members of the public feel about these methods in the future, and is it possible for researchers to gain any insight now? In a new article for Environmental Research Letters, Emily Cox, Rob Bellamy and Laurie Waller report on their study surveying people's attitudes and emotions around two novel CDR techniques (enhanced ocean alkalinity, or OAE, and direct air carbon capture and storage, or DACCS) in different types of political and economic scenarios. The authors found that certain scenarios had a major impact on participants' feelings about OAE, but their feelings about DACCS did not change significantly across the different scenarios. They also found that participants were more likely to feel anxious about OAE, but that DACCS tended to inspire more hope. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dCbgXbEK

New policy briefing – 'Delivering Greenhouse Gas Removal in the UK: Priorities for the government' Our new CO2RE policy briefing sets out recommendations for the new government to put the UK on track to scale Greenhouse Gas Removals in a sustainable, credible and timely way. These recommended actions are vital for achieving legislated climate requirements alongside meeting broader goals. Our recommendations include the following: 1. Take a strategic approach to Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR) to maximise opportunities for the UK and manage risks. 2. Put public engagement at the heart of GGR policymaking. 3. Harness the potential for the UK to lead on aligning climate and broader sustainability goals. 4. Create robust and flexible routes for GGR scale-up that build investor confidence. Last week in Brussels, Carbon Gap hosted an event on the state of CO2 removal in the European Union. Steve Smith and Oliver Geden joined a panel of experts to discuss the #StateofCDR in the EU today and how it can be scaled up. Check out Carbon Gap's reflections below and watch a recording of the discussion on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eAsTk2Gh
🧮 Numbers speak louder than words The 2nd edition of the 'State of CDR' report reveals the gap between our carbon dioxide removal (CDR) needs and the current CDR deployment, and highlights the instrumental role policies play in driving further innovation and demand. 📖 Read it here: https://lnkd.in/d97fNnEE In the EU, important steps have been taken to develop and deploy high-quality CDR, via the Carbon Removal Certification Framework, the 2040 targets and ICM communications and several member states negative emissions strategies. 🌟 The EU and its member states now have a crucial role to play in developing a comprehensive and coherent EU-wide strategy to scale up a portfolio of CDR methods, with separate 2040 targets for emission reductions and carbon removals as its north star. This and more was discussed last Thursday during our event dedicated to the state of CDR in the EU. Many thanks to our speakers Oliver Geden, Steve Smith, Andrea Klaric, Ulriikka Aarnio, Artur Runge-Metzger and Chris Sherwood for your valuable contribution, Rebecca Gualandi for moderating this insightful conversation, and Christoph Beuttler and Rodica Avornic for your scene setters! We hope the reflections drawn from the second edition of the State of CDR and discussed with our panel inspire you to take action. ▶️ Watch the event recording here: https://lnkd.in/eAsTk2Gh ⛱️☀️ We are looking forward to meeting again in September, refreshed and inspired! #StateofCDR #CRCF #2040targets

It was fantastic to host members of the Greenhouse Gas Removal Future Leaders Network at the Negative CO2 Emissions Conference in Oxford last month. We're grateful for their contributions across the whole conference, and for how they made GGR come alive at our "Goodbye Greenhouse Gas!" event at The Old Fire Station, Oxford. Thank you, FLN!
Last week, the GGR Future Leaders Network (FLN) took to Oxford to participate in the 3rd International Conference on Negative CO2 Emissions. Our members were well represented across the five days but we've picked out some of highlights: 🎭 In a industry first, we hosted a GGR Science Slam with Garrett Guard, Paola Sáenz and Soren Vines all taking to the stage. 🍵 An exercise in public engagement with 'Ask Me Anything' hosted by Aaron Benjamin and Louisa Brotherson, PhD 🎤 Hearing Aissa Dearing expertly navigate environmental justice and anticolonial approaches to the voluntary carbon market 🧪 Olivia Hawrot demonstrating Origen's zero-lime technology using dry-ice 📰 Poppy Russell presenting Counteract's investments in the Business Showcase Looking forward, we are off to visit Drax Group to explore the largest decarbonisation project in Europe and dig deep into BECCS in the UK and abroad! Keen to get involved in The Network? Send in an application, we'd love to hear what you're up to: https://lnkd.in/eEBJQycR
