🧮 Numbers speak louder than words The 2nd edition of the 'State of CDR' report reveals the gap between our carbon dioxide removal (CDR) needs and the current CDR deployment, and highlights the instrumental role policies play in driving further innovation and demand. 📖 Read it here: https://lnkd.in/d97fNnEE In the EU, important steps have been taken to develop and deploy high-quality CDR, via the Carbon Removal Certification Framework, the 2040 targets and ICM communications and several member states negative emissions strategies. 🌟 The EU and its member states now have a crucial role to play in developing a comprehensive and coherent EU-wide strategy to scale up a portfolio of CDR methods, with separate 2040 targets for emission reductions and carbon removals as its north star.   This and more was discussed last Thursday during our event dedicated to the state of CDR in the EU. Last week, the GGR Future Leaders Network (FLN) took to Oxford to participate in the 3rd International Conference on Negative CO2 Emissions. ➡️ Can we account for carbon removal projects within the Paris Agreement? A couple of weeks back I participated in the 3rd International Negative Emissions Conference organised and hosted by Oxford Net Zero and CO₂RE - The Greenhouse Gas Removal Hub. There are too many highlights to pick out: catching up with old faces, meeting many new, and learning a lot from the research community. An absolute personal highlight and privilege was kicking off the plenary session on Measurement, reporting and verification (#MRV) for carbon dioxide removals (#CDR), alongside the truly brilliant Joanna House and David Ho. I pitched my particular take on the MRV and carbon accounting interfaces. Thanks again to Steve Smith, Cameron Hepburn and Myles Allen for the invitation and warm welcome - the University of Oxford just has this magical way of making everyone feel at home. And thanks also to Jasmin Kemper and Tim Dixon for their unwavering support.

What is one of the core messages of the Global, Independent Scientific Assessment of Carbon Dioxide Removal published in June? Failure to strongly reduce emissions from fossil fuels and deforestation will put the Paris temperature goal out of reach, even with strong action on carbon removal. The leading scientists behind the assessment are telling us that regardless of how much carbon dioxide removal countries choose to deploy, the most important mitigation strategy in the near term is **reducing emissions**. The reality is that greenhouse gas emissions continued to grow in 2023, and this trend is incompatible with the Paris Agreement. Being involved in this second edition has been an absolute honour. It was the continuation of a journey where content, facilitation, and data visualisation progressed hand in hand, even before the final assessment was ready. Working with leading academics such as Oliver Geden (German Institute for International and Security Affairs, SWP), Matthew GIDDEN (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, IIASA), William Lamb (Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change, MCC), Jan C.
