Evidence is growing to support the role of inflammation in #ParkinsonsDisease, however, it remains unclear where inflammation causes neurodegeneration or results from it, and how changes in inflammation affect cognition.    To help address these gaps, researchers studied cognition and levels of inflammation in patients with newly diagnosed, untreated #Parkinsons compared to healthy controls. The study will continue with annual evaluations to determine if changes in inflammation occur over time. Baseline results, which show increased levels of several markers of inflammation in patients with Parkinson’s, were recently published in Movement Disorders. The Lancet Commission has updated their report on the prevention and care of dementia, taking into account new research published since 2020. The authors estimate that 45% of cases of dementia could be delayed or prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, and diabetes. Need another reason to drink coffee? New research published in Neurology has demonstrated an inverse relationship between caffeine consumption and the risk of #ParkinsonsDisease.    The large, prospective cohort study in six European countries looked at caffeine intake and blood serum levels of caffeine metabolites and assessed the risk of developing #Parkinsons over a median follow up period of 13 years. Among those who drank the most coffee, the risk of developing Parkinson’s was reduced by nearly 40%.
